Honda debuts V3 engine: the first three-cylinder V-shaped engine in history with electric compressor and water cooling

As it turned out, the rumors were right, as Honda engineers are officially developing a V3 engine, that is, with three cylinders in a mechanical configuration in a V at 75 degrees. Although it has not yet been installed in any model, it is expected that it will not take long to power a new generation of sports bikes.

This is an all-new, recently developed engine equipped with an electric compressor, "the first in the world for motorcycles". This would reduce turbo lag to a minimum, since, being electric, it does not need to wait for the exhaust gases to reach the turbine to be activated. The main purpose of this compressor is to be used in "larger displacement" motorcycles.

Although it is not specified, the brand mentions that this new engine was designed for "larger displacement machines" and was developed to be extremely thin and compact. The Japanese manufacturer highlighted that this compressor offers "a high degree of freedom in the arrangement of all components in the limited space available on a motorcycle, in addition to efficient mass centralization". In addition, an intercooler or cooler is not necessary to reduce its temperature.

This is undoubtedly a historic mechanical feat. Honda's last V3 engine was the two-stroke NS400R, in the mid-1980s. Now, more than three decades later, Honda returns to this V3 architecture in its lineup. The big question now is which motorcycle the engine will be installed in.

Electric turbine...So-called supercharged (or turbocharged) engines use exhaust gases to turn a turbine, which in turn “blows” this air into the engine. Therefore, the greater flow of air-fuel mixture into the combustion chambers directly depends on the engine speed.

In the case of the new Honda V3, the electric turbine has an auxiliary battery and is controlled by the ECU – Electronic Control Unit –, which provides an increase in flow regardless of the rotation, thus favoring torque at low rotations.

With the V3 engine, Honda offers performance-loving motorcyclists a new riding experience. The instant torque and linear power delivery provide exciting acceleration and precise control.

In addition, the electric compressor technology contributes to a significant reduction in emissions, making the motorcycle more sustainable without compromising performance. This combination of power, technology and sustainability will certainly attract a demanding and conscious audience, who seek the best in terms of performance and innovation.
