Driver Felipe Massa's lawyers have initiated legal action against Formula 1 bosses and the International Automobile Federation (FIA), seeking compensation for substantial damages resulting from an alleged "conspiracy" that stripped the then-Ferrari driver of the season's world title. from 2008.
A formal eight-page letter, seen by Reuters, was addressed to Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali and Paris-based FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
A pre-action letter is a mandatory formal legal notice before court proceedings can be commenced.
London-based law firm Enyo Law claims that Massa, now 42, was "the victim of a conspiracy committed by individuals at the highest level of F1, together with the FIA and the Formula 1 Administration".
The document says Massa lost tens of millions of euros in earnings and bonuses as a result of another driver's deliberate accident at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, which was allegedly covered up, before becoming a scandal in 2009.
