Shame on the Kodiaq

The new Škoda Kodiaq with an even wider range of drive options including a plug-in hybrid

This fall, Škoda Auto will present the second generation of its largest SUV, the Kodiaq, which will hit the market in 2024. The model will be available in 5- or 7-seat versions, with modern and efficient gasoline and diesel engines, and also, for the first time, as a plug-in and mild hybrid. In terms of safety, technology and versatility, the automaker takes its largest SUV to the next level.

Since its premiere on September 1, 2016, Škoda has produced more than 800,000 Kodiaqs at its factories in the Czech Republic, Ukraine, China, India and – until the beginning of 2022 – in Russia. The large SUV was the pioneer of the Czech car manufacturer’s successful SUV campaign. Optionally available as a seven-seater offering a spacious interior, the Kodiaq introduced Škoda’s fascinating crystalline design language to this segment. The large SUV has impressed buyers and journalists of international trade magazines – more than 40 international awards testify to its outstanding qualities and outstanding popularity on world markets.

Shame on the Kodiaq

Like its predecessor, the new model will be produced at the Kvasiny plant on the same production line as the Karoq, Superb and Superb iV. The new generation Superb model will start rolling off the assembly line in Bratislava in early 2024, which will free up capacity for around 150,000 additional units of the popular Kodiaq and Karoq SUVs annually.

The car manufacturer is investing about 12 million euros in the conversion of the production line to take into account future requirements, and the line is already prepared for the production of the Kodiaq iV model with a plug-in hybrid drive. Investments include the integration of existing technologies such as manipulators, chassis assembly and conveyors, as well as the modification of a window adhesive application robot. Up to 410 second-generation Kodiaqs should roll off the assembly line every day.

With the second generation Kodiaq, Škoda further improved its globally successful large SUV. It now comes with a more distinctive design and even more space, especially for passengers in the third row of seats. In addition, the second generation Kodiaq is marked by a new interior concept that includes a touch screen up to 12.9 inches in size, manual and digital controls and a neat, well-organized center console.

The engine range includes two petrol and two diesel engines ranging from 110 kW (150 hp) to 150 kW (204 hp), as well as a plug-in hybrid version – a first for the Kodiaq. This offers an electric range of over 100 kilometers.

The safety equipment is again state-of-the-art, boasting, for example, fully LED matrix headlights of the second generation and even more advanced assistance systems. Also: new Simply Clever features, such as a rear storage compartment with cup holder and a dual Phone Box that provides cooling and simultaneous charging of two mobile phones.

Škoda has improved the powerful and emotional design of its Kodiaq SUV. With an increase in length of 61 millimeters and a further increase in the wheelbase, the second generation offers even more space for up to seven passengers and additional headroom in the optional third row of seats. On the outside, the sculptural front end, square wheel arches and second-generation all-LED Matrix headlights stand out. The completely redesigned interior is defined by a 12.9-inch central display, a neat, well-organized center console and a combination of manual and digital controls for intuitive operation.

The sculptural front end, wheel arches and large wheels with a diameter of 17 to 20 inches emphasize the powerful appearance of the second generation Kodiaq. With a length of 4758 millimeters, the new Kodiaq exceeds its predecessor by 61 millimeters. In the seven-seat version, passengers in the third row of seats now have 15 millimeters more headroom, at 920 millimeters. Trunk capacity remains generous – 340 to 845 liters for seven-seaters and 910 liters for five-seaters.

The second generation Kodiaq comes with a completely redesigned interior. The new central touchscreen measures 12.9 inches. Moreover, customers can now order a head-up display in addition to the 10.25-inch virtual cockpit. The second generation Kodiaq features a smart combination of manual and digital controls. Making its Kodiaq debut is a center tunnel rear storage compartment with a cup holder for rear passengers. The second row of seats can be moved, and a flexible element in the trunk keeps things organized. In addition, the large SUV comes with familiar features such as door edge protectors and the iconic umbrella on the driver’s door.

More power, new technologies and greater sustainability...The second generation Kodiaq is characterized by an even more sophisticated design, the use of sustainable materials and innovative technologies such as the second generation of Full LED Matrix headlights. Its two petrol and two diesel engines range from 110 kW (150 hp) to 150 kW (204 hp). The 2.0 TDI with 142 kW (193 hp) and the 2.0 TSI with 150 kW (204 hp) come with all-wheel drive as standard.

The Kodiaq iV, the first plug-in hybrid in this model series, also offers a total power output of 150 kW (204 hp). In the Kodiaq iV, the 110 kW (150 hp) 1.5 TSI and the electric motor join forces to develop a system output of 150 kW (204 hp), which is delivered to the front wheels via a 6-speed DSG. The 25.7 kWh high-voltage battery provides an all-electric range of more than 100 kilometers.

In addition to the Kodiaq iV model, Škoda offers a pair of modern and efficient diesel and gasoline engines, which are exclusively paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Two 2.0 TDI units produce 110 kW (150 hp) and 142 kW (193 hp), respectively.

The 1.5 TSI is the entry-level petrol engine with 110 kW (150 hp), marking the debut of mild hybrid technology in the Kodiaq. Both hybrid engines are part of the latest generation EA 211 evo2 engine. They run on the fuel-efficient Miller cycle and feature a variable geometry turbocharger. The 1.5 TSI with mild hybrid technology also comes with the latest generation active cylinder technology (ACT+). The more powerful 2.0 TSI petrol unit delivers 150 kW (204 hp). TDI engines of 142 kW (193 hp) and TSI of 150 kW (204 hp) are equipped with all-wheel drive as standard, and all five power units meet the Euro 6e emission standard.

For the second generation of the model, Škoda has raised Kodiaq’s safety level even further and further improved some of its numerous assistance systems. Examples of this include emergency assistance and traffic jam assistance.

Shame on the Kodiaq

A new Remote Park Assist system is available for the first time in Kodiaq, debuting next year and allowing for remote parking via an app. It allows the SUV to be maneuvered in tight parking spaces outside the vehicle using a smartphone app. The vehicle and the smartphone communicate via Bluetooth at a distance of up to five meters. The Kodiaq can be moved forwards and backwards in a straight line using a smartphone as a remote control. During parking maneuvers, the system can detect approaching objects and pedestrians and automatically prevent collisions.

In addition, there are up to nine airbags that protect passengers, for the best possible passive safety.

Part of the optional travel assistance is traffic jam assistance, which combines predictive cruise control with Adaptive Lane Assist functions. Enables automatic starting, braking and steering in congested traffic up to a speed of 60 km/h, adapting to the movement of surrounding vehicles.
