Grassi 044S: spiritual heir to the Lancia Delta S4

Somewhat surprisingly, another world novelty was one of the protagonists in the scenario of the last Milan Monza 2023 Salon, held last week. This is the spectacular 044S, created by Grassi Scuderia Milanese with the intention of recreating the charm and shapes of those monsters that were the Group B rally cars.

Specifically, the model is the spiritual heir of the Lancia Delta S4, from which the lines and design of the 044S were inspired, a car made to measure and of which only 44 copies will be manufactured (for as many collectors) in the company founded by Diego Grassi.

The project is the work of designer Giuseppe Armano, former collaborator of Alfa Romeo's Centro Stile, who interpreted Scuderia Grassi's requests for a result that was presented at MiMo 2023 and which is described as follows:

“A work of art on wheels. The sculpted contours, sinuous shapes and impeccable finish give the car the right balance of style: an aggressive and dynamic look that contributes to giving the new 044 an unprecedented scenic presence and sporty soul.”

Both the bodywork and the mechanical part of this 044S were designed from scratch, so since they do not derive from an existing model, we cannot call it a 'restomod'.

In this case, in the rear position we find a powerful gasoline engine, 4 cylinders in line and 3.0 liters, which offers more than 650 hp of power, appearing coupled to a 6-speed sequential transmission and a four-wheel drive system.

That's enough for the Grassi Scuderia Milanese 044S to reach a top speed of over 300 km/h and be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. This is also due to the use of ultralight materials, such as carbon fiber and aluminum, which reduce the total weight of the set to 1,200 kilograms.

In terms of dimensions, we are talking about a sports car measuring 4,180 mm in length, 2,000 mm in width and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. Thus, it is slightly shorter than, for example, a Toyota GR 86 (4270 mm), and exactly the same as an Alpine A110 (4180 mm).

The Italian brand expects to manufacture just 44 examples of this interesting model and offer customers an infinity of customization possibilities, although the final price of the Grassi 044S has not yet been announced.
