1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2: $158,000

A 1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 sold at auction in the US for $158,000.

The car was imported to the USA from Switzerland in 2019, and the previous owner bought it last year. It is painted red and has a beige interior, and is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

It is a really well-preserved specimen with only a few “scars”, which has traveled only 39,000 kilometers.

The R5 Turbo was designed by Marc Deschamps and Marcelo Gandini and debuted at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show before competing in the FIA Group 4 Rally Championship. Later, the Turbo 2 appeared as a more affordable option that offered the same performance.

This model features Turbo 2 graphics on the doors, front and rear fog lights, flared fenders, panel intakes and contoured rubber inserts in the lower section. The previous owner finished and painted the bumpers, but the body still needs more attention.

The car has lightweight red rims with Michelin TRX tires installed in 2019, while there is a steel spare wheel in the trunk. Disc brakes take care of stopping. The aforementioned engine develops 160 hp and 221 Nm of torque and is paired with a five-speed manual transmission through which power is transmitted to the rear wheels. It takes 6.9 seconds to accelerate the 970 kg car from 0 to 100 km/h.

The previous owner replaced the coolant temperature sensor, spark plugs, fuel filter, clutch and fuel pressure accumulator, installed a JPR Classics Ltd shift lever and fixed a few other problems before the sale itself. He also handed over some spare parts and complete documentation to the new owner.
