Euro 7 is unfeasible for 2025, says Iveco CEO

Euro 7, the next phase of the pollutant emissions program for heavy vehicles in Europe, is not feasible. At least within the period defined by the countries of the continent. In other words, 2025. That's what the CEO of the Iveco Group, Gerrit Marx, says. According to a publication made by the Reuters agency, the executive believes that the efforts to comply with the new rules are enormous. Therefore, they will require investments that will make it unfeasible to enter into force within the period initially foreseen.

According to Marx, moreover, the process is very long and complex. This is because, in parallel with the development of solutions for combustion engines, the industry is working to accelerate the electrification of trucks. Furthermore, he says, there is still no coordination or coherent industrial and environmental policies.

According to the executive, the Euro 7 standard is "absurd". However, he claims that he is not referring to emission reduction targets, but to the development deadline. According to Marx, this is only feasible in the case of smaller engines, for light vehicles. Although. "It is not correct to have such a tight deadline for the industry to develop technology for heavy vehicles. Mainly because this occurs in parallel with our commitment to zero emissions", he says.

Hydrogen would be an alternative for Euro 7...According to the executive, the European Commission will have to give up some of its goals. “Either we will continue investing in the development of combustion engines or we will focus on fully electric ones”, he says. Thus, he refers to the body that represents the countries of the bloc and defines what must be done.

According to the CEO of Iveco, betting on hydrogen is the only way to guarantee the reduction of emissions in the transport sector at the levels proposed by the European Commission. By rule, the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% by 2040. That is, in relation to 2019 rates.

Evidently, Marx takes advantage of the notoriety to pull the coals for his sardines. After all, Iveco is already working on the development of hydrogen propulsion systems. According to him, this type of solution would be more effective than the Euro 7. In 2022, the brand took to the IAA, the biggest fair in the transport sector in the world, a hydrogen truck made in partnership with the North American Nikola.

In addition, he proclaims that the use of hydrogen is cheaper than that of electric vehicles with batteries. It is worth remembering that this may be true in the case of Europe. This is because the electricity generated in the countries of the continent comes from sources such as thermal and nuclear power plants, for example.
