AUTONEWS

The Most Reliable and Least Reliable Car Brands

For the 34th year, JD Power and Associates announced the results of this year's annual US Vehicle Reliability Study, where Lexus came back to the top. In second place is Genesis and in third is last year's winner, Kia.

The Tesla case...Tesla is officially included for the first time in the results of this survey, having 242 problems per 100 cars. Although Tesla does not give JD Power permission to search its cars in 15 US states, the agency was able to collect a large enough sample of Tesla model owners from the remaining 35 US states that do not require such permission. Tesla's license and so the calculation was made in this research.

Non-premium brands are less of a problem...Another interesting takeaway from this year's survey is the fact that non-premium brands are more trusted than premium brands. Non-premium brands averaged 182 issues per 100 cars, 8 fewer than last year and 23 fewer than the 205 issues per 100 premium cars. This is the biggest difference between the two departments in the 34 years of this survey.

Less problems with Korean models...Korean cars have the least problems with 153 per 100 cars, followed by Japanese cars with 183 problems per 100 cars. The American had 202 problems per 100 cars and the European 221 problems per 100 cars.

Most Reliable Model...According to this survey, the most reliable models were the Toyota C-HR and Lexus RX with 111 problems per 100 cars. Toyota saw 6 of its models, the Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Toyota C-HR, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Sienna and Toyota Tacoma take the top spot in their categories as the most reliable cars.

Four awards were won by BMW and GM with the BMW 4 Series, BMW X2, BMW X5, MINI Cooper and Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Silverado HD, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, respectively. Hyundai Motor Group took 3 awards with Kia Forte, Kia Optima and Kia Sportage.
