MB G 500 Caterpillar: fit for any extreme winter
They say there is nothing more resistant than a Mercedes-Benz G Class, however, the Delta 4x4 tuner took a G 500 and mounted a set of tracks on it, creating a vehicle that was baptized with the name of Mercedes-Benz G 500 Caterpillar.
When it comes to maximum traction, tracks or chains offer the ideal solution. The wide tracks clearly allow the vehicle to sink far less into the most unstable surfaces. By sinking less, the power of its traction is considerably greater than in wheeled vehicles. When used in the harshest winter terrains, this type of technology is unsurpassed, which has been clearly demonstrated in the daily efforts of operators of excavators and military vehicles.
This is why René Veraguth, director of Swiss Caflisch Garage, was at Delta 4x4, located in the city of Unterumbach, in southern Germany, with a special request.
This prosperous agronomist who lives in the Swiss Alps wanted to redesign his Mercedes-Benz G Class to run on treadmills so that he could reach his mountain hut located at almost 3,000 meters above sea level regardless of the prevailing weather conditions.
To make room under the fenders for the huge tracks, the specialists in off-road models gave the G 500 an additional 20 centimetres. Integration into the vehicle has been done in such a way that the tracks can be easily removed in the summer months and replaced with conventional all-terrain wheels.
We know that in these whims, the costs are astronomical. The mats can cost 50,000 euros, to which you have to add another 19,000 euros for homologation and another 20,000 euros for the rest of the conversion elements, such as the luggage rack, the front protections and the wheels for the summer.
