GIULIA SWB ZAGATO: a beautiful coupe based on a model of the Giulia Quadrifoglio
Over the last few years, teasers, renders and rumors of all kinds and conditions about the Alfa Romeo Giulia Coupe have been the order of the day since the launch of the Giulia Quadrifoglio, around the year 2016.
And the interest was not only from Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, but also from the media. So, with certainty and great satisfaction, the first official photos of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato appear.
A model that recalls the golden age of Italian bodybuilders, who throughout the history of the automobile were able to create masterpieces that are still valued and appreciated throughout the world, both aesthetically and monetarily.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato that appears in the images is a sports car that is inspired precisely by these creations, taking the form of a coupe based on an example of the Giulia Quadrifoglio with manual transmission, combined with the power (540 hp) and the regulation of a Giulia GTAm, and adding a short chassis setup to the car.
The idea was born in 2021, to celebrate 100 years of collaboration between Zagato and Alfa Romeo, based on the desire of a German enthusiast to modify one of the Giulia Quadrifoglio in his collection.
We are talking about a version with manual transmission, whose wheelbase has been shortened, as we can see by the acronym SWB, which correspond to the English words 'short wheel base' (short chassis).
In fact, the wheelbase has been reduced by 12 cm, combined with 14 cm less in the rear overhang, to achieve an overall length of less than 4.40 meters, compared to almost 4.65 for the original Giulia Quadrifoglio.
The enlarged gauges, in turn, were taken from the Giulia GTAm, which was also the reference for the regulation and for the power of the 2.9 V6 biturbo engine, which goes from 510 to 540 hp.
After the structural work on the Giorgio platform of the Giulia and the Stelvio, the Milanese 'atelier' developed a carbon fiber bodywork with shapes inspired by the Zagato SZ of the 60s and 90s.
The rear part features the typical truncated tail, as well as the unmistakable roof projections, all the way to the front part with the '3 3' headlamps, also seen recently on the Tonale SUV. Something logical, considering that the Alfa Romeo style center collaborated with Zagato in defining the shapes of the SWB.
The interior also features carbon fiber and dispenses with the rear seats. The star of the interior, in any case, is the presence of the manual gear lever, which makes an already unique sports car even more exclusive.
The taillights are not round, as you would expect from an Alfa Romeo sports car: in their place, there is a subtle light element that follows the sinuous lines of the tail; The engine hood is inverse opening and when it is open it is spectacular.
Furthermore, the color chosen for the bodywork is not the classic red, but a green taken from the painting used in the Giulia Quadrifoglio, GTA and GTAm, but reinterpreted by Zagato. Which makes this one-of-a-kind piece really stylish.
