Kona: first impressions
After the arrival of the KIA Niro, it is now up to Hyundai to make its move and this week it showed the first details of the new Hyundai Kona.
Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled a futuristic design for its new generation Kona. The new model will be available in four versions: 100% electric (EV), hybrid electric (HEV), with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and a sporty N-Line version. All of these versions will have a common universal architecture, but each of them will have a unique style.
The new Kona has evolved into a larger SUV with bolder styling and a more driver-centric interior. The new model has grown to 4,355 mm in length, 150 mm longer than the previous generation, based on the EV version. It also gained 25 mm in width and 60 mm in wheelbase.
Unlike most vehicles that are marketed with different propulsion systems, the design and development teams started working on the Kona with the EV version, which soon adapted to the design of the ICE, HEV and N-Line models. This unconventional approach has allowed Hyundai to bring a technology-focused design concept to all Kona variants.
The new Kona's clean and distinctive front end features pure volume at the front end, which contributes to the model's smooth aerodynamic performance. The design is underscored by the elongated, pixelated horizontal light on the EV version, which adds distinctive character. The Kona's use of parametric pixels also propagates a distinctive design element to Hyundai's popular EV lineup.
The rear incorporates another continuous horizontal light, as well as a high luminosity brake light (HMSL) that integrates seamlessly into the spoiler's chrome frame.
The dual 12.3-inch widescreen display and floating module convey a high-tech impression. Ambient lighting enhances user experience and convenience. With the automatic gear selector located behind the steering wheel, it offers a clean layout and additional storage space in the center module.
There are several styling options between the propulsion versions. The EV incorporates pixel graphic accents on the front grille and rear bumper, a pixel-inspired 19-inch alloy wheel design, a black beltline, and optionally black side mirrors and roof. The ICE and HEV share a bold, robust design on the bumpers and sump guard, as well as the black coating on the wheel arches. The N-Line features optional black roof and side mirrors, wing-shaped spoiler, more aggressive front and rear designs with wing-shaped bumpers to accentuate a lower stance, distinctive 19-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust outlet and silver side skirt.
According to the brand, the model arrives with greater “livable space” inside. The universal architecture derived from the electric vehicle offers a sporty layout with a floating horizontal C-Pad that accentuates the Kona's wide and slim interior, providing versatile space for driver and passengers.
In the coming months more details of the new Hyundai Kona will be revealed.
