eActros 300: the environmentally friendly truck

The Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 is a 100% electric truck that stands out for its flexibility. That is, it can act both in urban and road transport. This is due, among other factors, to the autonomy of up to 300 km. The model will be delivered to European customers in 2023. Sales began in September, during the IAA Transportation, the official name of the Hannover Motor Show. Estradão visited the fair, in Germany, and took a tour of the novelty, but in the passenger seat.

Initially, the Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 will have two versions. The mechanical horse can pull all semi-trailers sold in Europe. In this case, the only restriction is the maximum length provided for in each country's legislation. The tractor is intended for heavy and road operations. Finally, the rigid one, like the one in which we travel, serves to transport drinks and food. As well as garbage collection, for example. More common in cities.

According to the company, the eActros has three sets of batteries with a capacity of 160 kW. Thus, in fast stations, charging takes just over an hour. However, for road operations there is a version with four battery packs. The rated capacity is 112 kWh and the useful capacity is 97 kWh. Named the eActros 400, this option has a range of up to 400 km.

A canon in the Mercedes-Benz eActros...It is worth remembering that the manufacturers always publish the best numbers obtained in their tests. Thus, it is necessary to consider that the truck has an energy regeneration system. That is, the electricity generated during deceleration and braking is sent to the batteries. Therefore, this contributes to increasing autonomy.

In any case, eActros 300 can have a total gross weight of 14 to 19 tons. PBT varies by implement type and battery pack. The model we turned around had a short trunk, three sets of 112 kWh batteries and a PBT of 19 t. Daimler Trucks project manager Bertram Wunderlich drove the eActros for about 7 km, on a circuit with urban and road sections.

Even from the passenger seat, it was possible to perceive the great response of the eActros to the accelerator commands. This is common in electric vehicles, as the torque is immediately available. According to the manufacturer, there are two electric motors integrated into the rigid axle. As well as two-speed transmission and two driving modes: economy and power.

Power exceeds 540 hp...According to the brand, the engines generate continuous power of 330 kW, equivalent to 448 hp. In addition, the maximum power reaches 400 kW, or 543 hp. As a result, on the road the truck reached 90 km/h quickly. It is worth mentioning that this was the maximum programmed in the speed limiter.

Through the screen at the top of the central panel, you can see the electricity consumption. As well as monitoring the operation of the energy regeneration system. All in real time. Thus, the driver can manage the battery reserve more efficiently.

Another common aspect in the case of electric vehicles is the low noise level on board. Running at 80 km/h, the decibel meter measured just 40 dB in the eActros cabin. In fact, the finish is similar to that of the Actros with a combustion engine. Therefore, the instrument panel is also the same. The screen installed in the central part of the dashboard is touch sensitive and brings together controls for various truck functions.

2nd generation cameras...In general, all commands have very intuitive activation, which facilitates operation. The multifunctional steering wheel collaborates with this. The eActros 300 we were traveling on had a second generation camera system. The resource, which replaces conventional mirrors, should be launched in Brazil at Fenatran, in November. Among the highlights are 10 cm shorter arms, as well as better image quality.

According to Mercedes-Benz, there is no forecast for the launch of the eActros in the Brazilian market. According to the company, one of the reasons is that the country, which has continental dimensions, still needs to develop the charging infrastructure. In addition, the electric truck has a price equivalent to triple that of a model with a combustion engine.

Mercedes-Benz announced at the Hannover Motor Show that it is developing the eAtego. That is, the 100% electric version of the model. Therefore, to start the electrification process in Brazil, this truck would make more sense than the eActros. In any case, the release date of the eAtego in Europe has not been revealed.
