TOYOTA

Japanese brand diesel engines will use diesel from 100% renewable sources

Both the Land Cruiser and the Hilux will be adapted to use HVO100 diesel as fuel.

– Land Cruiser and Hilux models will be able to use HVO100 diesel as fuel, a type of fuel of non-fossil origin, made 100% from renewable sources

– HVO100 fuel can be used in the diesel versions of the Hilux* and Land Cruiser models that will be produced from the first quarter of 2023.

Toyota's most powerful body-on-chassis models will soon be able to use HVO100 diesel (HVO – Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a non-fossil fuel made from 100% renewable sources, such as used cooking oil.

HVO100 as fuel...HVO100 (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) meets the European quality standard for paraffin diesel EN 15940. It has a higher cetane number (c80) than standard diesel and has a lower sulfur and aromatic content. It is made from vegetable oil (palm, rapeseed) or waste-based raw materials (eg used cooking oil).

Plan for European market...HVO100 fuel pumps are becoming more and more common at gas stations in Europe, so there are now around 1,000 of them in use in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands , Norway and Sweden. At the same time, as more and more customers switch to HVO100, production of this fuel is increasing with a goal of reaching 15.5 million tonnes by 2030, up from the roughly four million tonnes produced annually.

Driving experience...It is important for customers that the use of the HVO100 diesel does not require any special action or changes in driving style and habits.

The main technical change from current vehicles is the adjustment of the fuel injection system to increase the amount of fuel. This is necessary because HVO100 is less dense than standard diesel. However, the change does not affect the vehicle's ability to run on "regular" diesel, so both fuels can be used on a daily basis. As a result of using HVO100 and tuning the injection system, a small increase in maximum engine power is also achieved.

Vehicles with new specifications will be produced from the first quarter of 2023, and at the beginning of marketing they will only be available in Western Europe.
