Model Y ahead of Mercedes
The Tesla Model Y has overtaken the Mercedes GLC in the premium compact SUV model segment and could become the best-selling European premium vehicle overall if it overtakes the Audi A3, BMW X1, Mercedes A-Class, BMW 3 Series and MINI hatchback.
Sales of the Model Y have been steadily increasing since the car was introduced to the European market last year. In the first six months of this year it was the best-selling car in Norway, in June it was first in Sweden and in Great Britain it finished second that month.
Nearly half of the cars sold in the premium compact electric SUV segment are the Model Y, and the Audi Q4 e-tron makes up a third. The BMW iX3 is the third best-selling electric model in this segment, and the fifth is the Mercedes EQC. The Jaguar I-Pace is at the bottom of this category with 3,528 units sold in the first half of the year.
In the plug-in hybrid segment, the best seller is the Mercedes GLC with 14,379 units sold, followed by the Volvo XC60 and the BMW X3. Behind them are the DS 7 Crossback, Lexus NX, Audi Q5, Range Rover Velar, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar F Pace.
Gasoline models account for just 15% of sales in the premium compact SUV segment, the first being the Porsche Macan. Hybrids are led by the Lexus NX, but that's not surprising, as this is the only model with this type of propulsion in the segment. In the first six months of 2022, this car was chosen by 3,206 buyers.
Tesla announces that it will increase production in the second half of the year thanks to increased capacity at the new factory in Germany. Company director Elon Musk has promised that by the end of this year or the beginning of next, up to 5,000 vehicles a day will leave the factory in Germany, instead of the 1,000 that were made in June.
