AUTONEWS
The Xiaomi Group has for the first time revealed details about the progress of the development of autonomous driving technology for cars. Work in this regard began in March 2021. Since then, the Chinese company has made considerable progress and has already started testing autopilot in a street environment.
According to reports, Xiaomi's self-driving division currently has over 500 employees. In the first stage, 3.3 billion yuan (US$490 million) was invested in this initiative. The company also announced a series of high-value acquisitions and strategic investments in upstream and downstream businesses to develop its medium and long-term industrial capabilities in autonomous driving.
“Xiaomi's self-driving technology uses a self-developed integrated approach, and the project has exceeded all expectations,” said Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun in a presentation today. The company also showed a video in which the Xiaomi car demonstrates precise, safe and intelligent driving in various scenarios, including roundabouts, roundabouts and continuous descents.
The successful development of the autonomous driving system was facilitated by the purchase of Shendong Technology, a specialized startup, due to which Xiaomi was able to expand its technological expertise and personnel potential. The company's ultimate goal is to become a leader in autonomous driving by 2024. To achieve this goal, Xiaomi plans to assemble a fleet of 140 self-driving cars to be used to test the technology across China.
