Tesla confirma plano para construir quinta gigafábrica no Canadá

Elon Musk wants another gigafactory in Canada

The company is lobbying for the construction of its fifth gigafactory in Canada. According to local publication Electric Autonomy, documents revealing the automaker's plans have appeared in the public registry of lobbyists in the province of Ontario. According to the document, Tesla intends to build an electric car factory in Canada that can compete in productivity with major US factories. Tesla representatives have already discussed the details of the project with a number of officials, including representatives from Industry Canada.

Speaking at its annual investor meeting earlier this month, founder and CEO Elon Musk hinted for the first time that Tesla is considering Canada as a location for a new factory. The company did not publish an official announcement, but EA journalists discovered that Tesla's plans for Canada had already gone beyond "studying the website". Since companies in Canada must disclose all of their lobbying efforts, the project to build another Tesla gig-factory was made public a few weeks ago.

The application, filed in July of this year, says Tesla wants to team up with Canada's government and agencies to "demonstrate opportunities to create advanced manufacturing facilities." The paper's authors argue that with Tesla's support, Canada is able to create a company that can compete with fast-growing factories in North America. At the same time, the company noted that it has the right incentives from the authorities for the construction of this plant.

Analysts suggest that Tesla will choose a location in one of two provinces - the company will appear in Quebec or Ontario. Both regions are in high demand in the electric vehicle market, both among consumers and manufacturers. Quebec has been the leader in the rate of electric car adoption for several years, while Ontario ranks first in terms of the amount of investment attracted.

Tesla's Canadian plant could become the company's fifth automotive facility, with the potential to produce between 0.5 million and 1 million vehicles a year. Now, Tesla has four such gigfactories - in California, in Texas, in Berlin and also in Shanghai. Together, these factories already produce more than 1.5 million electric vehicles a year, although two of them have just started. By expanding production in Shanghai and opening new facilities in Berlin and Texas, Tesla hopes to reach an annual assembly of 2 million cars by the end of 2022.
