European Union plans to register only electric cars with no exceptions from 2035
The European Union (EU) plans to register only electric cars from 2035 onwards, with no exceptions, reports TASS citing the publication of the German newspaper Handelsblatt. At the same time, previously registered cars can be used even more.
Handelsblatt became aware of the compromise proposal of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU, which was sent by the country to the members of the bloc at the end of last week. It does not include new additions, exceptions or a longer transition period, and support for such a proposal in the European Parliament and the Council of the EU is not in doubt.
France proposes to ban the registration of new and light commercial cars that work with carbon dioxide emissions in the EU from 2035, meaning only electric vehicles will be subject to registration.
The compromise proposal only specifies new reporting obligations, according to which the European Commission will be obliged to assess the implementation of recycling measures for automotive workers every two years. This is due to the loss of jobs in Eastern Europe due to the cessation of production of internal combustion engines for passenger cars. The European Automobile Suppliers Association (CLEPA) estimates that up to half a million jobs will be lost in the EU because of this.
Although initially opposed to the phasing out of internal combustion engines, Germany is now supporting the European Commission's proposal to ban them with the advent of the Traffic Light coalition. The vote on this issue is due to take place today.
