Daily 35-160 with Euro 6 engine is put to the test in Brazil

Since January 1, 2022, the Iveco Daily in cargo, van and chassis-cab versions is offered with a new engine in Brazil. Thus, it meets the standards of Proconve P8, a phase equivalent to Euro 6, which have just come into force in the country. According to the manufacturer, in addition to being less polluting, the four-cylinder turbodiesel was up to 6% more economical. However, the price has risen around 10% compared to the previous model. Therefore, the chassis-cabin option, with the one evaluated, now starts at around R$ 223 thousand.

Be that as it may, in addition to the improvements made to the four-cylinder, Iveco has implemented other updates to the Daily range. It is worth remembering that the model has a Total Gross Weight (GWP) of 3.5 tons and a single wheel.

The 35-160 version features a chassis with 5 mm thick spars. This translates into a 200 kg gain in load capacity. According to Iveco, the technical PBT is 4,400 kg.

The cabin has also been updated. The steering wheel has a new design and features on-board computer and radio controls. The instrument panel has new, more colorful graphics. Likewise, in the center of the panel is the 3.5-inch screen of the multimedia center. The system, similar to the one found in automobiles, allows you to check vehicle operating data in real time.

The seats have a new design, in addition to headrests and larger seats. Likewise, foam has higher density. In addition, there is height and depth adjustment. Among the various storage compartments, a niche under the passenger seats has a capacity of 80 liters.

On board, the low noise level stands out. In the measurement, the decibel meter recorded 70 dBA. This with the Iveco at 50 km/h, in third gear, with the engine spinning at around 1,100 rpm. In the green range, that is, where the four-cylinder works most efficiently, the rotation varies from 1,500 to 2,400 rpm.

With the new adjustments, the engine of the Iveco Daily 35-160 gained 10 hp. Supplied by the FPT, the 2,998cc F1C MAX now generates 160 hp at 3,000 rpm and 39 mkgf of torque between 1,600 and 2,900 rpm. The in-line four-cylinder has a common rail electronic injection system and variable geometry turbo (VGT).

In addition, to meet the new emissions regulations, the engine received SCR and EGR technologies. That is, the first is a catalyst and the other is the recirculation of exhaust gases. According to the manufacturer, this guaranteed a 3% reduction in diesel consumption. According to Iveco, the other 3% are the result of improvements made, for example, in the design, which became more aerodynamic.

In other words, this is a wide rotation range. And, even running at 90 km/h, with the sixth gear engaged, the four-cylinder did not exceed 1,450 rpm. According to Iveco, this is the result of the adoption of a longer axis, with a ratio of 3.73:1.

And while the Daily 35-160 is aimed at urban operations, it does well on highways. In this sense, the six-speed manual transmission provided by ZF is a great ally. According to the brand, fifth and sixth gears work as overdrive.

On the other hand, in sprints the Daily takes a while to pack. However, it is worth mentioning that the Daily was fully loaded. Anyway, after taking off, the truck shows good resourcefulness.

The suspension is pretty good. At the front, the system is independent and at the rear, it has a semi-elliptic spring. Thus, it delivers a good level of comfort and filters irregularities in the floor efficiently.

Handling...In the same way, it is an easy vehicle to manoeuvre. The evaluated model had a trunk and had a wheelbase of 3,520 mm. There is a 3,750 mm version. The width, 2,429 mm including the mirrors, also facilitates driving on urban roads. Incidentally, the height of 2,233 mm also gives a good sense of security. This is because it allows you to see what is happening in the traffic ahead. The large glazed area collaborates with this.

So this contributes to security. In fact, in this sense the Daily is well equipped. Among the highlights, it has electronic traction and stability controls, hydraulically assisted brakes and a ramp exit assistance system. As well as brakes with ABS and EBD and traction control, among others.

By the way, the system has disc on all four wheels. The front ones are ventilated and the rear ones are solid. The wheels are made of steel measuring 6.5?x16.0?. The tires are 225/75 R16 front and rear. The capacity of the diesel tank is 90 liters and that of the Arla has 17 l.

In the list of options, there is a tire pressure indicator and automatic activation of the windshield and headlight wipers, for example.

Visually, the new front grille is the same as the European versions. The headlights have a cornering function. That is, the fog lights, which are automatically activated, point in the direction in which the steering wheel is pointed. This way, it better illuminates the path in curves, for example.

Verdict...The attributes of the Iveco Daily line have been retained in the new generation. In other words, robustness, comfort and good handling. Now, with the updates, the 35-160 model has gained electronic resources, more technology and an engine that guarantees a reduction in diesel consumption. This without compromising good fast lane responses. Therefore, it is a good option for urban transport operations. As well as short-distance bus stations.
