Kia and Hyundai register an increase in the share of electric and hybrid vehicles in the sales structure in South Korea

This year, the share of electric and hybrid vehicles in the sales structure of Kia and Hyundai in the domestic market has surpassed the psychologically important barrier of 20%, according to statistics from Business Korea. Now, every fifth new car from these brands sold in South Korea is equipped with a traction motor in one combination or another.

Last year, this level was not reached, although the number approached 18.2%. Hyundai and Kia sold 229,107 vehicles with new engines last year, an increase of 41.8% in 2020. In the first quarter of this year, the companies managed to sell 22,768 electric vehicles, which is 2.6 times more than the same result. last year – so only 8,925 units were sold.

In total, 273,762 cars were sold in South Korea in the first quarter of this year, of which 64,417 or 23.5% were electric and hybrid vehicles. A year ago, the latest figures did not exceed 44,574 cars and 14.1%, respectively. In other words, the share of vehicles with electric traction motors in the Korean domestic market increased by more than one and a half times over the year. Korean automakers have proven to be quite resilient to the shortage of semiconductor components on a global scale. The impressive progress in the field of electric mobility is the best proof of this.
