Company wants to increase electrified production, with the goal of reaching 400,000 units in the United States
Electric cars seem to be in high demand in the United States, the land of pickup trucks and V8 engines. In fact, there, the electric Ford F-150s, for example, overflowed in orders and reservations, forcing Ford to increase production. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is also in the same situation.
Soon Dearborn's pick-ups will be facing heavyweight rivals like the Chevrolet Silverado EV, an electric pick-up that also rocked the reserves, making it clear that the combination of a pick-up body and very powerful electric motors works very well. In fact, even GMC will ramp up production of its Hummer EV, anticipating an increase in demand.
With such a favorable situation, General Motors plans to notably increase the production of electric vehicles. According to some reports, the company's executive director, Mary Barra, has announced to investors that there is an intention to accelerate the production of electric vehicles, with the goal of reaching 400,000 units in the United States between 2022 and 2023.
Barra did not give further information about it, but shared some details with suppliers, which indicate an increase in production of Cadillac electric pick-ups and an electric SUV, until reaching a total of 46,000 units in 2022. Previous plans had forecast to manufacture only 7,000 electric cars in 2022, which means multiplying production by more than 6.
On the other hand, General Motors is expected to resume production of the Chevrolet Bolt, which was stopped by the problem that arose with the batteries, which could explode. So far, they have been carrying out the replacement of the affected batteries and after that it is expected to return to production.
The Bolt appeared in 2016 and production is expected to end in 2023 or 2024, leaving its space, as predicted, for the electric Chevrolet Equinox (the prototype in the image above).
