TESLA

New carbo-ceramic brake kit for Model S Plaid costs $20,000

Even though the Model S Plaid beat its rival Porsche Taycan Turbo at the Nürburgring, turning out quicker by almost 12 seconds per lap, Tesla announced early on that they wanted to take a few more seconds off their best time. To achieve this, it intended to use the same weapons as Porsche, that is, to mount brakes that would better withstand intensive use on the circuit and ensure greater aerodynamic support, using a retractable rear wing.

From the rear wing, which we've already seen being tested at the German circuit as an active aileron, which varies its incidence to increase support in corners and even when braking, then almost disappears on the straight, optimizing speed, there's still no sign. It will probably still be in the development phase, but the same doesn't happen with the improved brakes.

On Tesla's North American website – not yet in Portuguese – it is already possible to order the most efficient braking kit for the Model S Plaid, which is more similar to the one used in competition cars. Carboceramic discs grow in diameter (410 mm) and thickness (40 mm), so that more generous discs appear at the rear, measuring 410 mm x 32 mm.

The one-piece forged jaws use six pistons at the front and four at the rear, with the braking system changing the conventional oil for one with greater temperature resistance. With this change, to which also new brake pads are added, not only will the Model S Plaid need less space to stop, it will also be able to carry out the same operation over and over again, without the oil starting to reach temperatures so high that their performance deteriorates.

The new braking kit is available on the North American market, for a value of 20,000 dollars, which is equivalent to around €17,700, leaving us to know when it will be offered to Portuguese customers and for what value.
