Indy driver stands for the first time after a serious accident
In August, Robert Wickens suffered what was probably the most shocking accident of the entire auto season. At the Pocono Grand Prix in Pennsylvania (USA), valid for Formula One's 14th stage, Schmidt team driver Peterson Motorsports collided with the side wall and suffered several fractures in his body. Just over three months later, he is advancing in recovery and is even able to stand up on his own.
Even with the high gravity, the accident does not erase the Wickens season, which was named Rookie of the Year by Autosport magazine. And in videotaped for the delivery ceremony, the Canadian talked about the recovery, claiming to be living one of the most difficult phases of his life.
"I'm just here for rehab, but I just wanted to tell you how honored I am to be nominated as a potential rookie of the year. Everything is going well here in rehabilitation, although there is a long way ahead of us. I'm getting up for the first time this week, getting into the walkers, and honestly, it's probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, "he said.
With multiple fractures, Robert Wickens has lost much of the movement and mobility of his body. He underwent several surgeries, but still has no prediction of returning to the tracks. Getting up on his own, in fact, is already a victory for him, which, even in such a situation, is still optimistic.
"I'm trying to get back to a car as soon as possible. I hope to see everyone soon, maybe next year, in the Autosport award!"
