Forgotten Concepts: Chevrolet Journey
In 2002, compact SUVs were not yet feverish in the Brazilian's head. Ford was preparing to launch the EcoSport, which was to be presented at that year's Auto Show. At the same time, General Motors also thought about participating in the segment and showed on its booth the Chevrolet Journey, concept that served as a test for the design of a compact crossover. At the time some pointed him as possible successor Blazer, but in fact was smaller and had more urban footprint.
Created by the design studio of General Motors of Brazil, the Chevrolet Journey had as premise to mix the characteristics of a sports car with those of a utility. "This vehicle has been designed to overcome the traditional design of two existing SUV boxes with a more dynamic approach, providing maximum versatility," explained David Rand, then design director at General Motors Brazil.
It used the Zafira platform and was 4.38 meters long, 2.70 m between axes, 1.60 m high and 1.77 m wide. This made it bigger than the current Tracker, which is 4.25m long and 2.55m high. He wore 18-inch wheels with 235/50 tires. The body was fiberglass painted in pearly gray. GM said it was designed in a way that would be technically viable for production, though it has never come true.
