TRUCK TOYOTA HYDROGEN IS MORE ECOLOGICAL THAN A PRIUS
After successfully completing all testing for its development, Toyota will put its heavy-duty fuel cell truck to work in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, USA. This will mean the definitive demonstration that its hydrogen mobility technology is not only valid for cars like Mirai but can also carry heavy goods. This Toyota truck has the provisional name of 'Project Portal' and is within what in the United States it calls 'Category 8'. That is, trucks over 15 tons, which is the heaviest type within its standard. What sets it apart from other heavy trucks is that it will not emit any polluting gas thanks to the fuel cells of two Toyota Mirai and a 12 kWh battery. It does not look like much for a truck this size, but its numbers of power and torque are actually very surprising.
The total weight that the Toyota truck needs to withstand is 36,300 kg, so your engine needs to be up to that effort. You can not confuse the capacity of your battery and your fuel cells with the power it will develop. Of course, these data affect the autonomy of the truck, which is 320 km. Its engine is capable of delivering a maximum of 670 hp and 1,800 Nm of torque, very respectable numbers within its category. In a statement, Toyota North America executive VP Bob Carter said: "Our brand has led the way to expand understanding and adoption of fuel cell technology. From launching Mirai to creating the Project Portal heavy-duty transportation system, Toyota has demonstrated the versatility and adaptability of its fuel cell with zero emissions. "
Technology for the use of hydrogen in transportation has been developing a lot in the last few years, however, the electrics are winning the match with a faster entry in the market. It remains to be seen whether the new hydrogen extraction system, which uses sea water and the sun, is being implanted, since it could mean the normalization of this type of vehicles, to be able to compete with the electric trucks like Tesla and the Hybrid Project One from Nikola Motors, among others.
