OPEL

Opel Grandland X - International Presentation

Text/Reporting: João Tomé and Vasco Reis-Portugal

lightweight, agile and predictableCompetitor of Seat Ateca, Nissan Qashqai and company, the cousin of the Peugeot 3008 is the third and largest (so far) Opel SUV and promises space, technology and elegance. But is it enough for the many rivals? Arrive at the beginning of 2018 in Portugal and we went to meet him on the roads around Frankfurt.
The fashion of the SUV! Everyone wants a piece of this (sub) growing segment and for this, the new models are born as mushrooms by all brands. Opel is no exception and after the Mokka X (already 4 × 4 segment B SUVs) and the most recent Crossland X (already launched in 2007 and also in segment B, but in a cheaper and cheaper perspective) the first SUV of the German brand of segment C.The Grandland X completes the X-range, of the brand's SUV, and is Astra-level, but promises more space and of course the benefits (for those who like) in height of an SUV. For this model that shares the platform with the Peugeot 3008 (it is even made in a factory of the PSA in France), Opel promises a 'Grand Excitment' (an exciting model - we'll see if it does), plenty of room for five occupants in an SUV for "active people, especially men with children".After the initial presentations, let's get down to business. A few days after its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, we went to ... Frankfurt, to the international presentation of the model that arrives already this year to several European countries, but Portugal, arrives late: only in the first quarter of the year.

Design and interior of good level
The design maintains the same line already seen in other Opel SUVs, although it (fortunately) looks more solid, wide, elegant and convincing than the Crossland X - the rear is particularly convincing and has a large panoramic roof as an option . It thus displays a front grille with two protruding bars that 'hold' the Opel logo and extend to the headlights to top in LED daytime running lights that shape Opel's traditional double-wing signature. Although the air is more ready for the adventure, the off road is not its specialty, since it is more thought for the city. The bodywork can take on painting in two colors, with black roof.Inside there is not much news compared to what we have seen in other Opel models. The dashboard and center console, with an 8-inch center touch screen, allow easy use and the console has three distinct levels of horizontally arranged controls for quick and intuitive access to the main infotainment, climate control and dynamic functions. The high driving position is typical of SUV.

Square Technology
Opel is committed to endowing its models with as much technology as possible. Grandland X is no exception and is compatible with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. In our test for the German roads we got to test the Google Maps navigation available in Android Auto and we liked the speed of processes and the clarity of the directions. There is also the OnStar support system on the go (with a flesh and bone assistant on the other side ready to help us at the touch of a button) and also includes a 4G internet hotspot. OnStar now includes assistance in finding parking (with the support of Parkopedia) and booking hotels directly through the assistant (through booking.com).There are also driving assistance technologies: Imminent Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection, Driver Tiredness Alert, Advanced Parking Assistance and 360 Degree Camera. There is also the Automatic Speed Programmer system with stop function, which maintains constant speed and distance for the vehicle from the front and locks (to immobilize) or accelerates the Grandland X when necessary. The brand still proudly boasts the five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. The AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) headlamps are fully integrated with LEDs.

One diesel, and the other gasoline
Two engines will be available at launch. The 1.2-liter direct-injection turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine delivers 130 hp and comes with a six-speed manual transmission; and the 1.6 Turbodiesel, with 120 hp and four cylinders. Our favorite turned out to be the diesel version, with more convincing recoveries and good response even at lower revs. Consumption also seems measured throughout the 100 km we made, with a mixed circuit averages of 6km/l (the brand announces values of 4.6km/l). We drove the gasoline version in a few kilometers, but enough to compliment the soundproofing of the engine, which has a good response at higher revs and is reasonable in recoveries.Opel also promises to launch somewhere in 2018 a 2.0-liter version with 180 hp and eight-speed automatic transmission. At the wheelThe driving sensations are mixed. We liked the ease of use, the comfort in progress and the predictable side of the Grandland X. Similar to other features of the SUV, it is at the level of several of the players in the segment, including Nissan Qashqai but, on the other hand, seems to offer nothing new or distinctive in a segment full of options. With its weight oscillating between 1350 and 1400 kg, it is a light but solid SUV in progress, which gives us confidence and conveys safety and, precisely because it is not heavy, is agile and pleasant in the corners, with the body oscillating little . On the other hand, the steering, although it is relatively direct, transmits very little of the road and the six-speed manual box never convinces beyond. That is, as we have already seen in other characteristics, it is predictable and safe, but it does not get to really excite. The promise of 'Grand Excitment' - or exciting model - has not been found elsewhere in the Grandland X. Despite this, space level (especially suitcase), comfort, soundproofing and technologies in general have plenty to offer.
