Yamaha R7. The Evolution of R/World

Yamaha’s parallel-twin R7 might not have the ultra-desirable status of its 1990s namesake but it’s carved out an enviable niche as a junior sport bike that’s the perfect route into more exotic machines. For the 2026 YZF-R7 gets its first major overhaul, gaining a subtly revamped look, a better chassis, and electronic updates including ride-by-wire and a six-axis IMU.

The essence of the 689cc CP2 parallel twin engine is unchanged, with no internal modifications, putting out the same 72.4hp at 8750rpm as before, alongside 50.2 lb.-ft. of torque at 6500rpm—a slight increase over the previous version’s 69.4 lbs.-ft. That’s down to the adoption of Yamaha’s Y-CCT (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) ride-by-wire system, a change that mirrors updates made a year ago to the naked MT-07 that shares the same motor.

But the R7’s updates go a step further by adding a six-axis inertial measurement unit to the mix, giving access to three-stage, lean-sensitive traction control, a slide control system, lift control to tame wheelies, and a cornering antilock brake system. The ride-by-wire also introduces adjustable engine braking with two modes, plus launch control. And this, remember, is an entry-level sportbike…

The new R7 combines Yamaha's acclaimed 689cc CP2 engine with advanced technology derived from the R1, including a 6-axis IMU, YCC-T throttle, and YRC riding modes. Combined with a refined chassis and agile handling, it delivers a perfectly balanced Supersport experience that more riders than ever can enjoy.

Maintaining the unmistakable DNA of Yamaha's R Series, the new R7 evolves with state-of-the-art design, refined suspension, and lightweight SpinForged wheels for agile and precise handling. A Supersport machine born from a racing-inspired style and designed for real-world performance.

689cc CP2 sport engine with high torque...With 73.4 hp at 8,750 rpm, the R7's 689cc engine produces powerful acceleration and smooth, linear torque. Its 270° crankshaft provides a responsive feel with the characteristic CP2 roar, while the Yamaha Electronic Throttle Control (YCC-T) system ensures precise power application for confident control with every twist of the wrist, on the road or on the track.

Born from Yamaha’s iconic R-Series legacy, the new 2026 Yamaha R7 blends advanced electronics, refined agility, and striking design to bring Supersport performance into everyday riding.

Proven on both road and track, the R7 continues to redefine the Supersport class for a new generation of riders. It now evolves further with R1-inspired electronics, refined handling, and bold anniversary colours that capture Yamaha’s racing heritage while pushing performance into the future.

Racing has always been at the heart of Yamaha’s DNA, and the new R7 carries that spirit forward by combining the proven CP2 powerplant with R1-derived technology and finely tuned geometry for an agile, confidence-inspiring ride that thrills on every twist and turn.

Next-generation R-Series design gives the new R7 a sharper, more dynamic edge. Its revised frame, fully adjustable suspension, and lightweight SpinForged wheels with Bridgestone S23 tyres deliver precise control and smooth, responsive handling that make every corner a joy to carve.
