New Toyota Hilux 2026 to feature enhanced technology, electrified powertrain
One of Toyota's upcoming international launches will be the new generation of the Hilux midsize pickup truck. It will undergo visual changes, cabin updates, and significant changes under the hood. All of this will ensure it remains one of the best-selling models in its class, leaving the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10, and others further behind. But when will Brazil receive these updates?
Recently, an Australian government agency released some information about what the public can expect from the Hilux's new lease on life. Currently, Toyota offers the model in Australia equipped with the 2.7-liter gasoline engine, but it may no longer be available in the future. The 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine was also not mentioned. Therefore, international media outlet Drive speculated that the 2.8-liter turbodiesel 48V semi-hybrid engine could become the only powertrain option for the new generation of the pickup.
In the region, it develops 201 hp and 50.9 kgfm of torque. Reducing the engine options would help the Japanese brand with production and also reduce its costs. There are rumors that the new Australian Toyota Hilux may feature non-electrified versions, both manual and automatic. This will provide options for all types of customers. All-wheel drive will continue to be offered. But the changes don't stop there.
The new generation of JAC's rival Hunter is expected to be built on the IMV platform, but it will undergo minor updates. Visually, the public can expect more modern lines and a robust feel, something essential for this category. Inside, Toyota is expected to heed the criticisms of the current model and make significant improvements.
A few months ago, images surfaced on social media suggesting a supposed new generation of the Toyota Hilux. At the time, there was talk of a global launch in 2026. Now, however, Thai media—where the model is also manufactured—claim that the pickup will make its debut at the Thailand Motor Expo—the local auto show—which runs from November 28th to December 10th.
Patent images already hint at what to expect from the newcomer, such as more modern lines, with tapered, LED-lit headlights, a more discreet front grille, and new front and rear bumpers. The rear isn't particularly innovative. However, straighter, more harmonious lines are expected compared to the current generation. It's still unclear whether the platform will be the same IMV, used since 2015, or if there will be an upgrade.
International websites suggest that the new Hilux won't just change its style. Electric steering, the incorporation of ADAS technologies, and even a plug-in hybrid powertrain in 2026 are among the speculations. It's worth noting that the Toyota Hilux is expected to initially feature a 48-volt powertrain for its 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine. This will be the mild hybrid package. There would also be the option of a 2.4-liter, 330-hp i-Force Max hybrid for the sporty GR Hilux. However, nothing has been confirmed by Toyota.
In any case, a patent leak has revealed the cabin of the ninth-generation Hilux. It's more modern, with a floating multimedia center positioned above redesigned air vents, a new digital instrument panel, and a completely redesigned center console. Even the gear lever has been repositioned, according to the patents.

The Instagram profile Cars_secrets recently revealed some patents that may indicate what the new cabin of the Japanese pickup truck will look like. It will have a straighter design and a new instrument panel. It is expected to become digital, and the multimedia center will become floating, like the Corolla sedan. Redesigned air conditioning vents, a distinctive center console, and a new steering wheel are among the new features.
According to Carscoops, Toyota may be working on a plug-in hybrid version of the new, more powerful Hilux. It combines the 2.4-liter turbo engine with an electric powertrain, producing approximately 326 hp and 64.2 kgfm of torque. This could potentially challenge the Ford Ranger Raptor, one of the most powerful pickup trucks on the market today, boasting 397 hp.
An electric variant of the Fiat Titano's rival pickup truck will be released later this year. The new generation of the pickup is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Thailand Auto Show in November. Markets in Oceania and Asia are expected to have it as an option later this year. Brazil, however, is expected to see it in person only in mid-2026.
