Peugeot 2008 disappoints in Latin NCAP test

The Peugeot 2008, which has four airbags, disappointed in the Latin NCAP safety test, released this Thursday (5), with the model being evaluated being manufactured in El Palomar, Argentina.

With one star, the second-generation 2008 does not seem to have surprised the institute, since, on their website, they say: “To date, the nine Stellantis models evaluated by Latin NCAP under the latest protocol — in force since 2020 — have not managed to obtain more than two stars”.

From this, you can already get an idea of what they will say about the 2008, which achieved 42.16% adult occupant protection, 59.21% child occupant protection, 54.48% pedestrian and vulnerable road user protection, and 55.81% safety assistance.

One of the points criticized by Latin NCAP was the side impact test with a pole, which was not performed, and was given zero points due to the lack of side head protection in the front and rear rows as standard.

Other negative points were the standard side curtain airbags and the passenger airbag deactivation switch. To avoid the risk of injury to children travelling in rear-facing seats, these are only offered in the most expensive versions.

Child occupant protection scored 29 points, or 59% of the total. Child restraint systems (CRSs) performed well in side impacts, but were limited in their installation in the front seat. The vehicle offers ISOFIX as standard, but is not i-Size compatible and does not have a front passenger airbag deactivation switch as standard.

The 2008 complies with the UN127 pedestrian protection regulation, but received an overall score of 54%. Head protection was adequate to marginal, with poor areas near the A-pillars. Lower legs performed well. The autonomous pedestrian braking system (AEB VRU) is optional, but does not meet Latin NCAP's criteria for validation.

The model offers ESC as standard and a speed limiter, but several features are only optional. The urban and interurban AEB systems, lane keeping assist (LSS), blind spot detection (BSD) and others did not score points because they were not available or did not meet the minimum installation and operation requirements demanded by Latin NCAP.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Latin NCAP, said: “Stellantis disappoints once again, in this case with a model that has competitors on the market that offer better passive and active safety equipment as standard, such as the Nissan Kicks Play, the Hyundai Creta and even models that have obtained five stars, such as the Volkswagen T-Cross and the Nissan Novo Kicks”.

Furas continued: “The Stellantis group has the technical capacity to offer better safety as standard and better performance. Under its new global leadership, Latin NCAP expects a reaction to improve the performance of its products”.

The executive concludes: “It is worrying to see that leading vehicle manufacturers, such as some of those that are part of the Stellantis group, continue to offer models with such low safety performance, as if lives in Latin America and the Caribbean did not matter as much as those in Europe.”
