BMW also offers an additional "trunk"

BMW is introducing new features in its transport box program.

For those who need additional luggage space, the only solution is a roof box. BMW has them in its range, but now it offers another interesting addition. The new transport box (Transport Box) does not go on the roof, but on the back.

It is mounted on the rear bike rack and offers an additional 340 liters of closed space. The transport box is attached to the rear rack, which includes integrated tail lights and a license plate holder, thus remaining compliant and fully functional on the road.

The box can be locked and, thanks to integrated wheels, it can be easily transported like a large travel bag. It is also compatible with the tilt function of the bike rack, allowing access to the car's trunk even when mounted.

BMW showed the Transport Box on the i4 M50 xDrive Gran Coupe, which pays a tribute in its coupé form with a slight lack of interior space. However, this solution is compatible with all BMW models equipped with a towbar. If you drive an M model, you will have to find a solution outside the standard range.

The transport box can carry up to 45 kg of equipment, and significantly increases the capacity of a vehicle with a smaller trunk. For example, the BMW 1 Series has a trunk of 380 liters, so with this box the total space is almost doubled.

Let's also say that BMW has not given up on classic roof boxes either - it still offers 320, 420 and 520 liter models, which are mounted on the roof racks and are available as part of the Travel Pack, depending on the vehicle model.

This accessory, called the Transport Box, adds 340 liters (12 cubic feet) of enclosed cargo space and can handle up to 45 kg (99 pounds) of gear. It attaches via an internal locking mechanism to BMW’s Rear Bike Carrier, which includes built-in taillights and a license plate holder, so it stays road legal and functional.

The Transport Box isn’t just a static add-on. It’s removable and lockable, and comes with a pair of small wheels so you can roll it around like oversized luggage. It also works with the bike carrier’s tilt function, which means you can still get into the trunk even when it’s mounted. Useful, right?

For demonstration purposes, BMW shared a video featuring an i4 M50 xDrive Gran Coupe. However, the same accessory is compatible with any BMW model that’s equipped with a tow hitch. Unfortunately, this leaves the M2, M3, and M4 models out of the equation, although there are aftermarket solutions that can make them compatible. As for the bigger M5, it already offers a hitch as a factory option.

BMW hasn’t revealed pricing for the new Transport Box just yet, but the Rear Bike Rack it mounts to will cost you €810 (about $920). If you’re looking at roof boxes instead, those range from $702 to $1,260 depending on size. They can also be bundled into Travel Packs for certain models, which include the required roof bars to get everything mounted and ready to roll.
