Crazy drift at Rally Monte-Carlo WRC 2025

Monte Carlo is one of the most iconic rounds of the World Rally Championship (WRC) and traditionally kicks off the start of each WRC season. In the 2025 edition, which began on January 23, the drivers drove through the streets of Monaco between the parc ferme and the timed sections and, on one of these forays into the city, they were encouraged by the public to spice up the show by revving their engines, making the wheels spin or doing some “crossovers”. Skills that the authorities do not appreciate and that the organization punishes very harshly. Just ask Toyota WRC2 driver Oliver Solberg, who was left out of the top spots due to a five-minute penalty.

Son of Petter Solberg, the 2003 WRC world champion, Oliver Solberg is a young Swedish driver competing in the World Championship in the WRC2 category. During the connecting route that took him back to the parc fermé, Solberg slowed down to gain distance from the car in front, so he could describe on a slide the old curve of the Loews Hotel (now the Fairmont Hotel), the hairpin that also It is the most emblematic curve of the Formula 1 circuit.

But the race organizers were not sympathetic to the public's joy and accused Oliver Solberg of having engaged in a demonstration of "exhibitionist driving", putting the safety of pedestrians and other vehicles at risk. As such, he was given a five-minute penalty for a “grace” lasting just five seconds. And the driver could have already come to the conclusion that this type of maneuver, although fun, is not worth the high price to be paid, as he already had a similar problem in the 2023 Rally of Portugal.
