NHTSA: the brands that made the most recalls in 2024
In the US, automakers are required to disclose safety issues with all vehicles and recall them to the repair shop. These are the brands that made the most “recalls” in 2024.
If there is one aspect in which the North American automobile market surpasses the European one, in consumer protection, it is in the area of safety. Unlike what happens in Europe, in the USA, brands are required to report to the national road safety authority (NHTSA) any anomalies or deficiencies detected in their vehicles and to publish them on the official website for public knowledge. Based on this data, it is possible to publish at the end of each year the ranking of the automakers that made the most calls to the workshop (recalls) to repair production or design defects that could put the safety of their customers or others at risk. who share the public road.
In 2024, the leader in recalls was Stellantis, with 67 calls to the workshop, almost exclusively due to the group's North American brands, followed by Ford (62 recalls), with General Motors (GM) appearing in 4th position ( 33) completing the poor result for American constructors. In 3rd place is BMW, which appears as the worst of the European brands, with 36 recalls, losing to Mercedes with 27. Hyundai comes next, with 25 recalls, ahead of Jaguar Land Rover (20) and Kia ( 19).
The worst Japanese manufacturer in the ranking is Honda, with 18 repair calls, a figure that is still much better than its North American rivals. Honda is followed by VW/Audi (18), both surpassed by Nissan (17), Toyota (16), Tesla (15) and Porsche (13).
The data collected by NHTSA also allows for the creation of another ranking, using as a criterion the number of units involved in the different recalls, a variable that (obviously) depends on the volume of units produced by each brand, harming those that sell the most. And if Tesla carried out one of the lowest numbers of recalls for vehicles sold in the US in 2024, the reality is that this involved the largest number of vehicles. There were no less than 5,135,697 units that, in most cases, had their issues resolved over-the-air and without the need for the driver to go to the workshop.
The second worst performer was Stellantis (4,722,452), followed by Ford (4,370,701) and Honda (3,794,113), with GM (1,872,521) rounding out the top 5. Rounding out the top 10 are, as follows: order, BMW (1,832,968), Toyota (1,221,666), Kia (1,211,778), Hyundai (1,109,978) and VW/Audi (1,088,407). Among the brands sold in Europe, the North American ranking also includes Mercedes in 11th position (409,751), followed by Mazda (297,941), Nissan (178,964), Subaru (118,723), Jaguar Land Rover (111,215) and Porsche (78,593). ).
