TESLA

Who would have thought...Cybertruck is the best-selling luxury vehicle in the US...

There is hardly a more controversial vehicle than Tesla's Cybertruck, the American electric pick-up truck with generous dimensions, as is normal for full-size vehicles in the country, but it is the fact that it is built in stainless steel that makes it more rigid and with distinct lines, as the curved surfaces disappear due to the difficulty in molding stainless steel, being replaced by edges and flat surfaces. With a legion of fans, but also considered unattractive by many potential owners of electric pick-ups, the Cybertruck is a clear case of love/hate. The sales figures for July suggest that the former are winning.

For American drivers, $100,000 is the threshold that separates regular vehicles from top-of-the-range vehicles, and it is above this level that American luxury brands such as Cadillac and Lincoln dominate, as well as their European rivals, from Audi to BMW, via Mercedes, Range Rover and Volvo. And, during the 31 days of July, it was the Cybertruck that sold the most units above $100,000, beating all other luxury models, with combustion or electric engines.

The sales figures for the last month have encouraged Tesla executives, especially since the average price of the units sold was around $111,000. However, in order to maintain this sales pace, the manufacturer must reduce the reasons for some customers' complaints regarding the quality problems that characterize the first units. Tesla is no stranger to problems with its youth — who doesn't remember when it launched the Model 3 — but the Cybertruck is substantially more expensive and customers who spend more money tend to be more demanding.

At the moment, the Cybertruck is only sold in the US and there is only one version of this battery-powered pickup truck being delivered to customers. It is the limited edition Foundation Series launch, with two motors and the most equipment-packed version. Deliveries of the “normal” version with the same mechanics (two motors and 600 hp) are expected to begin in September, followed by the much-awaited Cyberbeast, the most powerful and fastest version, with three motors and 845 hp, capable of reaching 209 km/h and 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, at the end of the year. The most affordable Cybertruck, with rear-wheel drive only, is expected to become available only in 2025.
