Pecco Bagnaia takes revenge in Catalunya by winning against Jorge Martín and Marc Márquez
The Italian Pecco Bagnaia has taken victory in the MotoGP race held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, taking revenge in one fell swoop for both his fall yesterday and the serious fall last year, both when he was leading. The current champion has managed to win against the Spaniard Jorge Martín, with the also Spaniard Marc Márquez completing another fantastic comeback on the podium after beating his compatriot Aleix Espargaró.
Pecco Bagnaia made a great start to take the lead against Pedro Acosta, Brad Binder and Jorge Martín, with Aleix Espargaró dropping to fifth position. Marc Márquez did not do too well, as he could 'only' gain three places and placed eleventh, although he soon got into the top 10, surpassing Fabio Di Giannantonio.
Martín put the bike in front of Binder to get third and recover the wheel from Acosta, who tried to get the bike in front of Bagnaia and went wide. From behind, Márquez overtook Enea Bastianini and, immediately afterwards, Jack Miller fell when he was leading the group chasing the leading six, where Raúl Fernández waited patiently.
Martín did not want Bagnaia to escape and decided to launch the attack on Acosta to put himself in second place. Bagnaia's pace had increased and both Espargaró and Fernández were beginning to cut each other. The Madrid native saw it and passed the Catalan to try to recover Binder's wheel, which he struggled to not let go of Acosta.
Martín did not want to wait and threw the bike at Bagnaia to take the lead of the race. It didn't take long for Acosta to also overtake the Italian to try to follow the overall leader, while Augusto Fernández fell behind.
Martín and Acosta began to escape from Bagnaia, while Aleix regrouped to regain position with Fernández and catch Binder, whom he overtook still with 14 laps to go. Fernández took advantage of this to put the motorcycle in front of the South African, which allowed him to reach Morbidelli and Márquez.
And while several overtakes began to occur in that group, Pedro Acosta fell when he tried not to let Jorge Martín escape. After the entire race behind him, Marc Márquez finally managed to get rid of Franco Morbidelli, immediately putting the bike on Binder to get fifth and go for the two Aprilias.
The race entered a phase of tension and fight in the distance, especially between Martín and Bagnaia. The distance between them was less than the second and the Italian seemed to have a little more pace than his rival. From behind, Márquez managed to reach the duo formed by Espargaró and Fernández, with Morbidelli trying to hook onto them as well.
With seven to go, Márquez paired up with Fernández and easily surpassed him to set his sights on Espargaró. In that same turn, Franco Morbidelli, who was having his best race with Ducati, went down.
Only one lap later Bagnaia's attack arrived on Martín to snatch the lead and soon opened a small gap that seemed difficult to replicate, based on the pace of both. That shifted the focus to the fight for third position, where Márquez was close to Espargaró to overtake him with four laps to go.
Pecco Bagnaia raised his advantage over Jorge Martín to take the victory and, behind, Marc Márquez covered all the gaps for Aleix Espargaró to get on the podium. Fabio Di Giannantonio entered fifth after surpassing Raúl Fernández and Álex Márquez, with Brad Binder eighth.
Ninth was Enea Bastianini, but a penalty equivalent to a ride through for not completing a long lap sent him away from the points. Fabio Quartararo inherited the position, with Miguel Oliveira in the top 10. Twelfth was Maverick Viñales, with Pedro Acosta saving three points after rejoining the race and Joan Mir keeping the last point at stake.
