Maverick Viñales makes history by beating Pedro Acosta in an anthological race
The Spanish Maverick Viñales has made history by becoming the first rider of the MotoGP era (and the fifth of all time in the premier class) to win with three different brands when he debuted with Aprilia, beating the Spanish Pedro Acosta at COTA, who becomes in the youngest to chain two podiums in a row in queen class; all this after the fall of Marc Márquez when he was leading.
The Italian Enea Bastianini has completed the podium after surpassing the Spanish Jorge Martín, who remains the solid leader of MotoGP 2024.
The traffic light went out and Pedro Acosta made a fantastic start to take the lead and behind him a mess began when Jorge Martín touched Pecco Bagnaia, who in turn touched Maverick Viñales and he lost all acceleration, dropping to tenth position. This allowed Enea Bastianini to move into second place ahead of Enea Bastianini, Jorge Martín, Jack Miller, Marc Márquez and Pecco Bagnaia.
Miller put the bike on Bastianini and Márquez took advantage of it to overtake the Italian before finishing the first corner. In the second came Martín's first attempt on Acosta, who recovered the inside well, at the same time that Marc tried it with Miller, who also recovered the inside, they touched and that allowed Bagnaia to pass the Spaniard. Immediately afterwards, Bagnaia passed to Miller and Márquez did the same.
Martín did not stop trying with Acosta, who again and again allowed the Madrid native to slip slightly to maintain the first position until, in the third lap, he finally managed to consolidate it in the linked, and in the next it was Márquez who left run the bike through the interior of Bagnaia to place third.
Just half a minute later the eight-time champion took advantage of a mistake by Acosta to place second, and the Murcian then lost another position in favor of Bagnaia. Behind the Murcian were Miller, Bastianini... and Viñales, who had been climbing positions until placing seventh.
At the end of the fifth lap, Márquez tried to overtake Martín, but they touched slightly and the Catalan went wide, making it difficult for him to be overtaken by Bagnaia and Acosta. The Murcian recovered after having lost three positions in a flash and grew by passing Bagnaia in turn one, who once again saw how Márquez passed him in the turns. Takaaki Nakagami fell behind first and Franco Morbidelli shortly after.
Martín was beginning to open some space on Acosta while Viñales had already placed fifth after getting away from Bastianini and Miller, who had tried to return the overtake to him without success. Yesterday's winner arrived in the wake of Bagnaia, who seemed to be doing something of a blocker, since he cut himself off from the leading trio. Joan Mir fell behind.
Behind Acosta, who had inherited the lead, Viñales overtook Martín to place second. After just over a lap, he overtook the Murcian with eight laps left to go. Martín followed them, behind whose back Bastianini overtook Bagnaia.
Maverick Viñales gained a second advantage and managed it perfectly to achieve a historic victory, which makes him the first rider of the MotoGP era to win with three different brands, also preventing Pedro Acosta from achieving the record of youngest winner of the history. Of course, the Murcian became the youngest driver to achieve two podiums in the queen class.
Behind them, Enea Bastianini sneaked onto the podium, overtaking Jorge Martín on the penultimate lap, with Pecco Bagnaia fifth. Sixth place went to Fabio Di Giannantonio, with Aleix Espargaró seventh followed by Marco Bezzecchi, Brad Binder and Raúl Fernández. Augusto Fernández and Álex Márquez also added points.
