And Toyota surrenders to Tesla

Toyota has announced that it is working to adopt larger presses and automatic forms of production to drastically reduce the manufacturing time for its vehicles. In an industry where time is money, building vehicles faster, thanks to technological advances, is the best way to generate cheaper cars, without pinching profit margins.

Gigapress are a type of press invented by the Italians at IDRA that perform a mix of pressing and molding, managing to form a large piece from an aluminum alloy in a viscous state – for example, an entire frontal area, usually composed of made up of more than 70 small steel parts that then have to be welded together to shape the front of the vehicle, which supports the “cradle” of the engine, suspensions and energy absorption areas during impacts. IDRA invented this solution that drastically reduces production time and weight, but it took Tesla to realize the potential of this resource, which requires a considerable investment. Confirmation of the validity of these presses (which also mold) comes with the announcement that Toyota, industry leader in sales volume and profits, will follow the same path. Not to please IDRA and much less Tesla, but because, according to the Japanese brand, Gigapress reduces the production time of electric vehicles from hours to just minutes.
