MERCEDES-BENZ DO BRASIL LANÇA ÔNIBUS RODOVIÁRIOS O 500 MAIS POTENTES PARA PAÍSES ANDINOS E OUTROS MERCADOS DA AMÉRICA LATINA

Mercedes-Benz Brazil launches new intercity bus chassis for Latin America

More powerful, more robust and more complete. Mercedes-Benz do Brasil launches new coach chassis for countries in the Andean region and other markets in Latin America: The 500 RSD 2448 6x2 with 478 hp and The 500 RS 1945 4x2 with 448 hp. Equipped with advanced safety technology items, these models become part of the brand's portfolio offered to customers from countries in the region who work in road transport and charter operations.

The two road bus chassis models are produced by Mercedes-Benz do Brasil at its factory in São Bernardo do Campo, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. The production line for these vehicles is the most advanced in the sector in the country, using Industry 4.0 concepts.

Both the O 500 RSD 2448 6x2 with 478 hp @1,800 rpm and torque of 2,300 Nm @1,100 rpm, “El más potente”, and the O 500 RS 1945 4x2 with 448 hp @1,800 rpm and torque of 2,200 Nm@1,100 rpm, stand out for the Mercedes-Benz OM 460 6-cylinder 12.9-liter engine, similar to the version enshrined in the Mercedes-Benz Actros extra-heavy truck. The vehicles comply with local emission legislation with the renowned Euro 5 technology.

The vehicles were tested under the most rigorous altitude and temperature conditions in Brazil, Peru, Chile and Mexico. “The development of these vehicles was thought to serve mainly Andean operations, mining and tourism segment” says Mauricio Yamamoto, Managing Director of Buses for Latin America.

“To obtain more power and efficiency, we launched the OM 460 engine for the O 500 vehicles that serve the Andean countries and other Latin American markets, which has an increased volumetric capacity to 12.9 liters, a new turbo compressor with a pressure of 2.4 bar and new diesel injection pressure of 2,200 bar to ensure better fuel spraying and more effective burning,” says Jens Burger, general director of the Daimler Latin America Regional Center. “In addition, it started to be equipped with a new engine control module, new electronic architecture and Visctronic, intelligent control of the radiator fan”.

Robust and economical ZF Traxon automated transmission... The powertrain of these new O 500 coaches has a robust 12-speed ZF Traxon automated transmission, with Over Drive and Direct Drive and with the possibility of receiving Intarder, Retarder auxiliary brake system.

“Among the Traxon's main features are a gearshift strategy that prioritizes fuel economy, silent operation, high input torque, lower lubricating oil volume and lower maintenance cost”, says Jens Burger.

This transmission is also equipped with EcoMode (greater efficiency in fuel consumption), EcoRoll (uses the vehicle's inertia to save fuel), PowerMode (gear changes at higher speeds that ensure greater agility on climbs and overtaking) and Holder ( ramp start assist system).

Reference in advanced safety technologies...Mercedes-Benz do Brasil has consolidated the road O 500 buses as the most complete in safety technologies on the market. Among its highlights are the ABA 5, the fifth generation of the emergency braking system, blind spot assistant and intelligent high beam control, in addition to more than 20 safety items already known by the market.

The emergency braking system (ABA 5) intervenes in the event of an imminent collision with moving or stationary vehicles on the road, in addition to recognizing cyclists and pedestrians, which is the great novelty of this technology. First, the ABA 5 issues a visual and audible alert to the driver. If there is no reaction, the system automatically performs a slight intervention on the brakes or can even reach a complete emergency braking, if that is the case. This reduces the risk of collisions and minimizes the effects of an eventual accident. In addition, the brakes will remain applied after the bus comes to a complete stop, until the driver makes a command on the brake or accelerator pedal.

In the case of the blind spot assistant (SGA), the system identifies what happens on the right side of the local bus where greater attention is needed for the driver, detecting pedestrians, cyclists and cars on the road, whether stationary or moving. The performance of the SGA results in more safety on the roads and more peace of mind for the driver.

Safety and comfort for the bus driver are also guaranteed by the intelligent high beam control (IHC). The system operates autonomously, dimming the high beam when the camera detects opposite light, so the driver can focus even more on the road and traffic. The system uses the LDWS camera, allowing full integration with the bodybuilder's headlight.
