GR H2 Racing Concept: the bolide with a hydrogen engine to compete in Le Mans
Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), announced during the press conference at the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) - held at the Circuit de la Sarthe (France) - that TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) proposes to register a hydrogen-powered vehicle in the corresponding test category in the future. Toyoda also congratulated the ACO on the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perfect its automobiles through the race.
The announcement follows a recent decision by the ACO, Le Mans' organizing body, to allow hydrogen-powered vehicles - in addition to fuel cell electric vehicles - to enter the race's hydrogen category.
In addition, during the press conference, TGR presented its prototype vehicle with a hydrogen engine to compete in the hydrogen category for the first time worldwide: the 'GR H2 Racing Concept'.
GR H2 Racing Concept...Toyota has been competing with a Corolla with a hydrogen engine in the Super Taikyu series since the third race of the 2021 season, and has also participated with the same model in the IDEMITSU 1500 SUPER ENDURANCE 2022, at Chang International Circuit, in Thailand in December 2022.
Thus, it has been perfecting its technologies in the arduous context of motorsport and, collaborating with like-minded partners both inside and outside the automotive sector, accelerating its initiatives to produce, transport and use hydrogen, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality. Toyota plans to continue to improve these initiatives to create ever better vehicles through competition and to make a carbon neutral society a reality, as it looks forward to the challenge of a new generation of racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
TGR will reveal details of the vehicle it will enter in the future Le Mans category when they become available.
The 'GR H2 Racing Concept' will be on display at the ACO's 'H2 Village', organized in Le Mans during the race, until tomorrow, Sunday, June 11th.
