NISSAN REVELA NOVA ESTRATÉGIA PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DE MOTORIZAÇÕES ELETRIFICADAS

‘X-in-1’: the acronym for the development of electrified motorizations by the Japanese manufacturer

Nissan has unveiled its new strategy for developing electrified powertrains, which the brand has dubbed 'X-in-1'. Through the strategy, key components of electric vehicles equipped with e-POWER hybridization technology will be shared and modularized, resulting in a 30% reduction in development and manufacturing costs in 2026 compared to 2019.

Through the X-in-1 strategy, Nissan intends to further increase the competitiveness of its electric vehicles equipped with e-POWER technology. Nissan has developed a 3-in-1 motorization prototype, which modularizes the electric motor, inverter and reducer, which should be used in electric vehicles. The 5-in-1 prototype - which also modularizes the generator and gear system - is expected to be used in vehicles equipped with the e-POWER system.

The X-in-1 strategy, which covers 3-in-1, 5-in-1 and other variants, was developed to allow key components of electric vehicles and the e-POWER powertrain to be manufactured on the same production line .

In 2010, Nissan became the first automaker to mass-market an electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF. Nissan has been listening carefully to its EV customers around the world to continue expanding its electrification technologies. In 2016, Nissan launched its exclusive e-POWER hybridization system using its electric motor technology, providing the same driving pleasure as an electric car thanks to the 100% electric drive system embedded in the propeller.

The X-in-1 strategy for the development of electrified powertrains offers the following benefits:

- Sharing and modularizing key components increases production efficiency and reduces engine costs by approximately 30% compared to 2019. Nissan aims to achieve price parity between its e-POWER and internal combustion engines by mid-2019. from 2026;

- The reduction in the size and weight of the engine enhances the vehicle's driving performance, minimizing vibrations and noise;

- The adoption of a newly developed electric motor reduces the use of rare earth elements to 1% or less of the magnetic weight;

- The sharing of key components and control technologies provide an enjoyable driving experience unique to Nissan electric vehicles.

Toshihiro Hirai, Senior Vice President, who leads EV and powertrain development, commented, “We make the most of our expertise and know-how from more than a decade in the development and production of electrification technologies. Through our innovations in the development of electrified powertrains, we will continue to create new value for customers and deliver 100% electric drive models – electric vehicles equipped with the e-POWER system – as widely as possible.”

Under its Nissan Ambition 2030 long-term vision, the company has a target to expand its range with the arrival of 27 new electrified models, including 19 electric vehicles, by fiscal 2030. Nissan wants to deliver the unique value of its vehicles electrified to an ever-increasing clientele, launching the right models for the right market at the right time.
