A couple of years ago, Nissan surprised us with the presentation of several of its totally renewed vehicles, such as the new generation of the Nissan Frontier. Among those vehicles presented that year, there was a new and fifth generation of the Nissan Pathfinder.
Last year we had the opportunity to test it in two of its trim levels, SL and Platinum. Now Nissan gave us the new one for a week Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek 2023 trim level first released in 2019.
The Rock Creek Edition includes a number of specific features and upgrades that set it apart from other Pathfinder versions to make it a versatile and capable vehicle on a variety of terrain.
The unit we tested for a week has a total cost of $45,250, including destination charges.
Pathfinder offers seven drive/terrain modes, designed specifically for this SUV to adapt to different conditions. The driving modes are: Normal, Mud and Potholes, Sand, Snow, Trailer, Sport and Eco. The driving modes are managed through a knob on the center console, which is very easily accessible.
This Pathfinder Rock Creek offers intelligent four-wheel drive (4WD), which improves the vehicle’s ability to move on different types of difficult terrain and of course adverse conditions and is complemented by a suspension tuned especially for off-roading. The front suspension is independent with struts, the rear is a multi-link suspension and comes equipped with Dual Flot Path shocks.
Another positive aspect of this off-road SUV is the towing capacity, which is 6,000 pounds, something very interesting for those who need to transport trailers or boats. The optional towing package included on Rock Creek comes with a trailer hitch and seven-pin connectors.
In fuel economy, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Rock Creek 4WD offers 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 21 mpg. combined (city/highway).
The exterior from the interior...The exterior of the Nissan Pathfinder we tested features details that reinforce its rugged and adventurous image, including exclusive badging on this special Rock Creek edition.
Other exclusive details include its black tubular roof rack for transporting various items along with black moldings on the distinctive Pathfinder line front grill. Their rear view mirrors are also black.
The white body color and all of the above features make this special edition look sportier and more attractive compared to other trim levels in the Pathfinder lineup.
Inside, the Rock Creek is very spacious and offers the same comfort characteristic of this SUV, offering space for seven passengers in three rows of seats.
The seats are upholstered in synthetic leather and have unique orange contrast stitching. The third-row bench seat features a 60/40 split folding backrest. The driver’s seat offers 10 electrically adjustable positions, including 2 lumbar support positions, and the front passenger’s 4 manual adjustable positions. In addition, both seats are heated. The second row seats are the captain’s type, folding and between the two there is a console that can be easily removed.
Other elements that include the seats and the lid of the center compartment between the driver and passenger seats are the exclusive embroidered Rock Creek badges in orange and through an optional package includes floor mats that also add to the distinctive touch of this SUV. The cargo area is protected with a protector and the steering wheel, covered with leather, offers heating.
Primary cargo space is 16.6 cubic feet, with the third row of seats folded it increases to 45 cubic feet and with the second and third row seats folded the cargo space is 80.5 cubic feet.
The infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto, allowing the driver to easily and safely stay connected to their mobile, with their music and some applications with which they are already familiar.

Safety and Driver Assistance...The new 2023 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek comes equipped with a wide range of safety features, such as the Advanced Seat Bag System, Automatic Emergency Braking System with Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Warning , Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Automatic Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning System and Lane Keep Assist.
Driving...The new 2023 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek 4WD is smooth, comfortable and stable in most road conditions. Its V6 engine offers adequate acceleration and great towing capacity.
The automatic transmission, as I said at the outset, offers a smooth and fuel-efficient driving experience, though throttle response is less immediate and direct when called upon suddenly.
Its steering in normal driving mode is too soft for my taste and the difference is very noticeable with the sport mode, which offers a more robust and safe steering. As for the suspension, it is stupendously optimized, absorbing potholes and irregularities very well, even off-road.
The Pathfinder Rock Creek holds up competently through turns. However, it should be noted that some competitors in the segment can offer a slightly snappier sporty driving experience, even when we used sport mode on the Rock Creek.
The cabin is quiet and well insulated, outside noise does not penetrate much. The seats are comfortable and offer good support, even on long journeys.
When it comes to off-road capability, the Rock Creek Edition improves its performance thanks to four-wheel drive (4WD). It handled very well off-road overall, and while it doesn’t have some of the extreme off-road capabilities that other off-road vehicles have, the Pathfinder Rock Creek is sufficient for most situations a typical driver might find themselves in.
Conclusion...The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek is an attractive option for those looking for a stylish SUV with enhanced off-road capabilities. The exterior design of the Pathfinder is robust and attractive, with a sporty air and this is produced thanks to the unique elements that distinguish it, both on the exterior and in the interior. The performance and safety features offer a very good driving experience and although it is not a pure SUV, with more extreme and advanced capabilities, it allows us to have a lot of fun off-road.
This SUV is a well-rounded and versatile option for those looking for a capable, well-equipped vehicle that can handle a wide range of situations and terrain. Ultimately, the new Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek 2023 is an option worth considering.
