1986 Ford Transit reborn electrified by Chinese hands
The second generation Ford Transit was launched in European markets in 1986, with an improved platform, a new design and engines largely inherited from its predecessor. During the following years, it received new engines and equipment levels, and in 1994 it debuted an important update.
That restyling, which also brought with it new engines, was in production in the Old Continent until 2003, although the original model continued on production lines in China until 2017. Afterwards, Transit was replaced in the Asian country by JMC Teshun, which is basically the same vehicle, but with a new front end and new interior.
This same van, for sale in China, has just received a new electric version, called the Teshun Touring EV, which includes some aesthetic touches. In addition to the electric version, the JMC Teshun is available with a 124 hp 2.8 turbodiesel engine.
It should be noted that the front panels that give it the appearance of the images are directly coupled to those of the original Ford Transit.
The 'plastic' looking grille is flanked by interestingly designed headlamps, but from the A-pillar backwards, the van is identical to the original 1980s Transit, although the taillights are those of the 90s restyling model.
The new electric version of the JMC Teshun hides a 65 kWh battery, enough to provide a range of 300 kilometers in the Chinese CLTC cycle and 320 kilometers in the NEDC cycle. According to the manufacturer, this number can reach up to 500 kilometers if “a constant speed” is maintained.
The propulsion system is based on a front electric motor, 120 kW or 163 hp, which also develops an immediate maximum torque of 320 Nm. In principle, the model can carry 1.2 tons of weight and offers a load volume of between 7 and 11 m3.
JMC claims that the electric van is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in around 15 seconds and reaching 120 km/h, so it's not exactly fast. The brand also advertises a battery charge (signed by CATL) up to 80% in 40 minutes.
