GM Aveo: the brand's entry-level hatch gets a new generation for the Latin American market

General Motors recently unveiled in Mexico the new generation of the Aveo, the brand's entry hatch. Available in hatch and sedan bodies, the models are made in China by the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture, and are destined for Latin American countries.

According to the news, the new Aveo is for sale in Mexico positioned below the Onix made in Brazil, available only in the sedan body. For now, his coming to Brazil is unlikely. However, press vehicles from South American countries, such as the Argentine website 16 Valvulas, guarantee that the hatch will arrive in the continent in the coming months to take the place of the Chevrolet Joy, which corresponds to the first generation of Onix.

Recently, GM transferred the production of Joy and the sedan variant, Joy Plus, from the plant in São Caetano do Sul (SP) to the GM Colmotores unit, in Bogotá, Colombia. Out of line in Brazil since 2022, the two models were made for export only. However, with the launch of the new generation of the Montana pickup, the manufacturer had to make room. Thus, the entire production of the Joy line was transferred to the neighboring country.

Therefore, with the investment, the forecast is that the new Chevrolet Aveo will land only in some South American markets. For example, according to a report on the website El Carro Colombiano, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru should receive the Chinese hatch, while Argentina and Colombia will continue with the veteran Joy. In Brazil, with the new generation of Onix recovering ground, the subcompact has little chance of arriving. Here, it would have Celta positioning.

The family replacement, made in China, goes by the name of SAIC/Wuling 310C. Among the versions available in Mexico are, for example, the LS Manual, the LT Manual and the LT Plus. The first is the most basic and therefore exclusive to fleet owners.

The compact uses a 1.5 petrol engine with 99 hp and 14.9 mkgf of torque, and a 6-speed manual transmission, with the option of a CVT transmission, also with 6 speeds. However, there is no information if the sedan version of the Aveo will also reach the South American markets.
