2024 BMW X5 and X6...The refreshed 2024 BMW X5 and X6 boast minor changes to their exterior styling, but comprehensive updates to their powertrains and technology. Both models make their public debut at the US Auto Show in March and go into production in April at the South Carolina plant.

The X5 xDrive40i, xDrive40i and X6 xDrive40i get a new generation BMW three-liter inline turbo six-cylinder engine. The powertrain gets mild hybrid support under a voltage of 48V with an electric motor that produces 12PS and 199Nm. The total power of the system is now 375PS 519Nm.

BMW estimates that the new X5 and X6 kDrive40i can accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. The figure was 5.3 seconds before the refresh. The X5 and X6 M60i xDrive still use the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, but now with the aforementioned 48V electrification. The aggregate power is still 523 HP and 750 Nm. Both models reach 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds.

The X5 xDrive50e PHEV replaces the previous xDrive45e. The total output power of the system of the three-liter in-line turbo engine and the electric unit here is 483HP and 700Nm, instead of the previous 389HP and 600Nm. Its updated electric motor produces 194PS and 380Nm, but can temporarily offer as much as 449Nm of torque. The model can reach 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, compared to 5.3 seconds previously.

The BMW xDrive50e now has a battery with a net capacity of 25.7kWh instead of a 17.1kWh unit. In addition, the battery can now be charged with alternating current of up to 7.4kW. This setup offers an estimated range of 64km on electric power.

All three engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The transmission now has an electric oil pump and torsional dampers to make shifting easier. With the available M Sport package, there’s a Sprint setting that automatically downshifts into the lowest usable gear, puts the powertrain in its sportiest mode and gets maximum electric boost from the mild hybrid system.

The refreshed X5 and X6 look slightly different from their predecessors, with light clusters that are 35mm narrower. The X5 is available with an optional illuminated grille. The X6 now comes standard with the M Sport package, which features an octagon in the lower part of the hood. V8-powered M60i xDrive models have quad exhaust pipes. Customers have several new colors at their disposal – blue, several shades of gray and green.

Changes in the cabin are more significant. The screens are now in a single curved glass display consisting of a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a 14.9-inch instrument monitor, and there’s also a 15-color ambient light strip.

As for driving assistance, there’s Highway Driving Assist that joins the optional Professional Package. The system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on highways up to a speed of 137 km/h. Assisted display mode on the instrument panel shows vehicles detected by cameras and sensors in the used lane and adjacent lanes.

The professional parking assistance records the driving of the vehicle in a length of up to 200 meters and can play it back. This means that the driver can call his vehicle from the BMW smartphone app.
