RALLY DAKAR 2023
The Chilean Nacho Cornejo has achieved victory in the twelfth and penultimate stage of the Dakar 2023, investing 1 hour, 57 minutes and 27 minutes in covering the 185 kilometers of special between Empty Quarter Marathon and Shaybah to prevail over the Australians Daniel Sanders and Toby Price .
Price becomes the new leader, who with two days to go leads with 28 seconds over the American Skyler Howes and with 2:40 over the Argentine Kevin Benavides; reason why the general classification arrives completely open at the end.
If the first part of the marathon stage was disappointing due to its lack of mileage and toughness, the second was more of the same. With some impressive landscapes that evoke those Saharawi Dakars, these two-hour days have nothing to do with those hellish days of the original Dakar. And, therefore, the differences either.
One more day, the differences have once again been minimal. It is ironic that the year in which the bonuses for opening the track are implemented is the year in which they are penalizing the least. Hence, Daniel Sanders went for Luciano Benavides, yesterday's winner, and overtook him before going through the second waypoint. A few minutes later, Toby Price was flying setting the best times.
Little by little, the tracks were doing their job and other pilots were getting involved in the fight for the partial victory that until then had been maintained, through bonuses, by the Australians Sanders and Price. As the (not many) kilometers passed, it began to be seen that the stage could speak Spanish.
The Argentine Kevin Benavides, called to assault the leadership of the test by leaving behind his two great rivals in the general classification, looked to win the stage but fell flat in the final section (perhaps on purpose so as not to open the track tomorrow). Quite the opposite of Nacho Cornejo, who went from less to more to end up snatching victory from Sanders and becoming the third driver to have won at least one stage in all the Saudi Dakars, after Price himself and Joan Barreda.
With a 3:37 bonus, Daniel Sanders was 49 seconds behind the Honda driver, while Toby Price dropped 1:58 after applying the 1:18 bonus. The bit of bad news for the Australian is that his teammate Matthias Walkner slipped behind him and ahead of Kevin Benavides and Skyler Howes, fifth and sixth on the stage.
Closing the top 10 were the Hondas and the Heroes of Pablo Quintanilla, Sebastian Bühler, Adrien Van Beveren and Ross Branch, on a day where the main victim of the top was Mason Klein, who dropped 25 minutes.
The best of the Spaniards has been Tosha Schareina in 11th position, with Lorenzo Santolino 18th and Joan Pedrero in the top 30. Despite having another great day, Javi Vega has seen how Charan Moore has cut him more than six minutes to stay at little more than two and a half in the Original general.
