NIO EC7: the new Chinese crossover with a sloping coupe profile

The Chinese brand NIO was not alien to the fashion for crossovers with a sloping coupé profile, as to the search for better aerodynamic characteristics.

The newly presented NIO EC7 crossover, according to the creators, has the best aerodynamic drag coefficient on the market among all serial cars of this class — the value does not exceed 0.23. In addition to a good profile, this is achieved with the use of active curtains on the radiator grille and a retractable spoiler on the edge of the trunk.

In China, the novelty will begin to be sold in May next year at a price of US$ 69,830 at the current exchange rate for a version with a traction battery with a capacity of 75 kWh. The machine will be equipped with two electric motors with a combined power of 480 kW (644 hp) and drive on both axles. The car reaches a speed of 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and the range of the basic configuration will reach 489 km. For an additional payment, you can count on receiving a traction battery with a capacity of 100 kWh with a range of 635 km, and the most expensive version will be a crossover with a traction battery of 150 kWh. Its estimated range according to the conditional Chinese CLTC cycle will increase to 920 km, but in reality, similar indicators will not be achieved during operation.

The width of the crossover will be 1974 mm, the height will not exceed 1714 mm, and the body length of 4968 mm will be combined with a wheelbase of 2960 mm. The coupe-shaped crossover will be equipped with an electrochromic panoramic roof, which can be shaded by command of the on-board computer without using a mechanical curtain. In addition to the lidar on the front edge of the roof next to the windshield, the car will be equipped with 32 more cameras and sensors, as well as NVIDIA Orin processors. The on-board system will be ready to implement SAE level four autopilot, which foresees movement mainly in automatic mode, but maintains the usual controls to intervene in the driver's process. However, Autopilot will be offered later and on a subscription basis for a separate monthly fee.

The restyling version of the NIO ES8 crossover presented the other day can boast of a similar hardware platform. The car is also offered in an all-wheel drive version with two electric motors with a combined power of 480 kW, but the increased dimensions and weight compared to the EC7 allow the car owner to count on an acceleration of 100 km/h. h in just 4.1 seconds. With external dimensions of 5099 × 1989 × 1750 mm, the ES8 crossover has a wheelbase of 3070 mm. A panoramic display is located on the front panel and 7.1 channel sound is already installed in the base. The climate control system supports independent adjustment of parameters in five indoor zones.

Simultaneously with the demonstration of the new version of the automatic traction battery exchange station, capable of storing up to 21 charged batteries and carrying out up to 408 replacements per day, NIO demonstrated a 500 kW express charging station that allows recharging the traction battery of 10 to 80% in just 12 minutes. The newly launched ES8 and EC7 models also support the function of automatically replacing the traction battery with a charged one at the corresponding self-service points.
