What's better, expensive used tires or cheaper new tires?
Buy cheap tires from an unknown brand or used premium tires? An expert from the YouTube channel Tire Reviews looked for an answer to this question, at least as it concerns the all-season Michelin CrossClimate 2.
Namely, this tire performed exceptionally well in recent Tire Reviews tests, earning praise for its handling in snow and wet conditions with reasonable performance in dry conditions. But these tires will cost you. A new set of four tires, for an average SUV, already reaches the limit of 1000 euros. On the other hand, little-known tires like the Tomcat Allyear cost a lot less, as does a used set of Michelin tires, he says. HAK Magazine.
To simulate a used set of CrossClimate 2 tires, all four tires are machined machined to just 2.2 millimeters of tread depth, which is above the US Department of Transportation's minimum recommendation, they were placed on the car and rotated by another 4,000 km. That distance was also covered on the new Tomket Allyear tyres, and two new sets of both brands were included in the test for a complete comparison.
Despite the significant lack of tread depth, the worn Michelins had faster lap times in snowy conditions compared to the new economy Tomket tires. It was only for a few seconds, but used Michelin maintained much more performance compared to Tomcat. The Tomcats also produced more understeer, while the Michelins were a little sketchy on braking. The Michelin tires also offered significantly better grip in the wet and provided better driver feedback, whereas the Tomcat tires always felt like they were on the edge. The Michelin tires were also better in the dry, but that wasn't a big surprise.
In the end, all the kudos go to the almost-worn set of Michelin CrossClimate 2 tires compared to the new set of Tomket Allyear all-season tires.
