Honda has announced plans to start producing a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle in 2024. The project will be based on the popular CR-V crossover. The project is part of a strategy to transition to electric cars alone by 2040 and zero-carbon cars by 2050.
The new model will replace the Clarity Fuel Cell sedan with a hydrogen engine, which the company stopped selling in 2020. It should be noted that the new model also provides battery-only electric motor power mode, which is proposed for use in short distance trips.
The automaker said the electric version of the CR-V with fuel cells will be produced at its performance manufacturing center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio. To power the electric motor, instead of a large battery, a hydrogen fuel cell will be used, which generates electricity as a result of a chemical reaction of a combination of hydrogen and oxygen.
Information about the new model is scarce. It is reported that the novelty will have the same appearance as the standard CR-V, both externally and internally, with the exception of minor visual differences, possibly in the interior trim, the shape of the headlights, etc. it is also known that it will use a new power unit created by Honda in collaboration with General Motors. It is an upgraded version of the Clarity engine and requires 80% less platinum to produce. The power unit will be at the front of the car, and the hydrogen tank at the back.
