VM line offers new Euro 6/Proconve P8 engine in 2023 and other great innovations
Arriving to meet the new Euro 6/Proconve P8 emissions regulation in 2023, the new Volvo VM trucks are the most complete and advanced since this line was launched in Brazil in 2003. All versions are equipped with a new 8.0-liter engine. , manufactured by Volvo, and the trucks received the new 7th generation I-Shift transmission, the same as the FH.
“These are innovations that transform the VM into a new truck, more economical, more powerful and safer, improving a model that is increasingly conquering the Brazilian transport company”, says Alcides Cavalcanti, executive director of trucks at Volvo.
Volvo engine...The news starts with the new Volvo D8K, an 8.0-liter engine with a new high-performance turbo and common rail injection, replacing the 7.0-liter propeller of the previous generation. It's a super modern technology, which adjusts to lower rpm for less consumption and adapts at high rpm when more performance is needed. The new platform offers higher powers of 290 hp and 360 hp, with torque of 1,050 Nm and 1,400 Nm, respectively. “With this new engine, fuel consumption is up to 10% lower, depending on the topography, load and type of operation”, assures Jeseniel Valerio, Volvo's sales engineering manager.
There are many advantages of the new engine, starting with the better performance with higher average speeds and the more powerful engine brakes, of 210 hp and the BEV of 300 hp, which provide greater safety and lower maintenance costs for components and linings. brake. There are also new factory power take-off options, available on all engines, and new software to manage the vehicle's electronic platform, with updated functionality for greater safety, precision and reliability. In this new version, the engine shutdown after five minutes at idle is automatic, a change to encourage more economy.
I-Shift 7th generation...Another great novelty of the new VMs is the new version of the renowned I-Shift transmission, which reaches the 7th generation, the same that also starts to equip the FH, FM and FMX Euro 6 trucks. received numerous enhancements that enabled faster, more accurate and smoother gear changes. With even greater intelligence and new electronic modules with super-fast processing, the innovations result in higher performance and lower fuel consumption, as well as better handling and comfort for the driver. The calibration of the new I-Shift was developed by Brazilian engineering, adapting it to local operating conditions.
The improvements promoted by Volvo's engineering provided another important benefit: in this generation, the VM gained the Heavy Start function, which increases the truck's efficiency to overcome slopes. The 7th generation I-Shift gearbox has sensors that measure the slope of the ramp and even the amount of load that the truck carries, modulating the turn to concentrate more torque at the appropriate time for maneuvering on slopes - all done automatically, whether on a road operation or vocational.
In addition, for greater productivity and availability, Volvo has fitted new differential ratios to the rear axles and introduced new power take-offs to the I-Shift transmission, for more versatility in implementation work.
The nine-speed manual transmission is still available as an option or for specific versions such as the VM City.
I-Roll...The VM is now equipped with a new technology, already present in the F line, which allows the truck to roll on the pavement without slowing down and without compromising safety. Called I-Roll, this function automatically puts I-Shift into assisted neutral and ensures that the truck takes advantage of the momentum provided by the topography, generating additional fuel savings. “It's less diesel consumption, but with complete safety”, observes Valerio.
Intelligent Acceleration in the VM...The new engine also allowed the implementation of Volvo Intelligent Acceleration, a pioneering technology of the brand that helps to save fuel. Algorithms designed by engineers identify the real torque requirement according to topography and load, controlling the fuel injection in an ultra-precise way, while using the accelerator pedal. “It is an excellent novelty for the VM, a decisive factor for the reduction of up to 10% of diesel consumption in the new Euro 6 engines of the model”, assures Valerio.
Driving modes...Another innovation was the introduction of the concept of driving modes to the VM. Now, the line has new driving modes, two for road vehicles (Economic and Performance) and two for vocational trucks (Economic and Off Road). In the Economy, the software uses all the resources to save diesel, and in the Performance, they use all the functions to prioritize performance, such as when overtaking. On Off Road, intelligence works by focusing the action to improve handling and maneuverability, when traveling on rough terrain, off-road, wet or in more difficult and severe conditions.
Safety...The VM has gained even more safety, confirming Volvo's commitment to offering the safest vehicles on the market, in line with the brand's Zero Accident vision. In addition to the powerful new engine brake, the VM now has EBS electronic brakes, which guarantee shorter braking distances and increased truck stability. Another important evolution was to equip the VM with the ESP (Electronic Stability Program), an active safety device that significantly reduces the risk of tipping over in sharp turns. In addition, Volvo introduced Ramp Starting Aid, an electronic system that, when starting off on slopes, provides more comfort and safety to the driver. The vehicles of the new line now come with a complete package of mirrors, including the front and the curb, as well as LED DRL (Daylight) headlamps for all models, including the vocational ones.
New instrument panel... Internally, the cabin is equipped with a new and modern instrument panel with a high resolution 4.3-inch color display. Very interactive, it brings much more information to facilitate the driver's work, with data on driving, on-board computer and maintenance.
VM Tractor Power...The VM mechanical horse now also comes in the exclusive Tractor Power version, always equipped with the 360 hp engine, 300 hp VEB engine brake and I-Shift gearbox. Available exclusively in the 4x2 version, “it is an ideal truck for logistics operations and medium distances, in the range of 40 tons. With the new Volvo engine and all the advances of the Euro 6 line, the Tractor Power is surely the best entry-level tractor option on the market”, says Jeseniel Valerio.
VMX and VMX Max...Volvo also made changes to off road VMs. It is a new vocational family, consisting of the VMX and VMX Max models. The vehicles have steel bumpers and dual 6x4 and 8x4 axles, in addition to the possibility of vertical exhaust. In addition, the VMX family now has the new rigid VMX MAX 6x4, which has a PBT of 34 tons, two more than its predecessor. This version comes with the 360 hp engine and 300 hp VEB engine brake. With a reinforced double chassis, it has an 8-ton parabolic front suspension, with a 26-ton semi-elliptical rear suspension.
The New VMX MAX shares a number of components with the renowned Volvo FMX heavy truck, such as the 7th generation I-Shift gearbox, hub reduction rear axle, Z-CAM brakes, rear suspension and beam beam. front axle. All the novelties resulted in benefits, with increased productivity, greater load capacities, robustness and availability, in addition to greater performance and safety with the new brake system and easier maintenance, due to the shared items.
