IVECO

eDaily: Italian manufacturer presented the hydrogen-powered chassis-cab version

The Iveco Daily has been in production for over 40 years, and this year is sure to be a significant milestone in the model's history. The Italian manufacturer presented the chassis-cab version, which is already equipped with the transmission of the future. In a way, the truck was deliberately “naked”. If there was some kind of superstructure in the presentation copy, it would not be clear how hydrogen tanks were put into practice. They were integrated directly into the chassis of the stairs, between the crossbars.

In this way, the Iveco Daily can carry a total of 6 hydrogen tanks(image below). In the case of the model with a wheelbase of 4,350 mm, this means that it can be refilled with a total of 12 kilograms of compressed hydrogen at 700 bar. The vehicle is powered by an electric motor of 188 horsepower (140 kW) and 400 Nm, which is supplied with the necessary electricity by a 90 kW fuel cell module. The hydrogen-powered Daily was also equipped with a battery with a total capacity of 37 kWh, so the powertrain can store the electricity produced by the fuel cells for later.

According to the manufacturer's information, the model can cover 350 kilometers using the fuel cell, but in purely electric mode, that is, with empty hydrogen tanks, it can also cover 50 kilometers, which will be enough for the driver. drive to a hydrogen filling station. in the future. Filling the tanks doesn't take much time as it takes 15 minutes which makes it competitive with battery powered trucks. It is interesting that the main components of the drive chain can be connected to Hyundai, which already has a lot of experience in transporting hydrogen cells, only the battery comes from the Italian FPT.

The vehicle is still a prototype, but as it can carry up to 3 tons of goods, it could be a realistic alternative to replacing diesel trucks. Iveco has not yet announced when it will be able to start its series production, but it's easy to imagine that it won't be long.
