The heavy 44-ton tractor has been added to the company's line of electric trucks. In total, Volvo Trucks has six electric truck models in series production, more than any other company. Batteries for them will be supplied by Volvo's Belgian plant in Ghent.
After passenger cars, heavy and medium trucks are the ones that emit the most greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. According to the EU, its share of emissions from the transport sector is 25%, and this figure is expected to grow.
Volvo Trucks, a division of the Swedish company Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of trucks, buses and components for them, with customers in 130 countries. In 2019, the company started electrification with the launch of two models: Volvo FL Electric and Volvo FE Electric. In 2020, VNR Electric was introduced in North America, according to Electrek.
Now three more heavy models have been added to this list: Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX. Its load capacity is 44 tons, but the range is different: for the FM model it is 380 km and for the FMX and FH it is 320 km.
Demand for electric trucks is growing rapidly in many markets, spurring customers to move away from fossil fuels, according to Roger Alma, president of Volvo Trucks. And the company is ready to increase production volumes so that 45% of all road freight in Europe is handled by Volvo Trucks.
Production of the new models will start at the Tuve plant in Gothenburg (Sweden) and next year at the Ghent plant (Belgium). The company has already taken orders for 1,000 heavy trucks and sold 2,600 units in total.
This summer, Volvo Construction Equipment announced the start of testing of the Volvo HX04, the world's first fuel cell articulated hauler. The model is equipped with a 12 kg hydrogen tank, which refills in seven minutes and allows the machine to run for four hours.
