Verstappen approaches second title winning at home

Max Verstappen took a step closer to his second world title on Sunday with a beautiful victory in front of his own crowd in Zandvoort (Netherlands). The Red Bull driver overtook Lewis Hamilton in an exciting final stage and then drove sovereignly to his thirtieth victory. A late safety car situation due to Valtteri Bottas' stoppage brought a lot of tension back into the race, which already appeared to be heading in Verstappen's direction. Hamilton took the lead with 12 laps to go. But as soon as he was back on the field, the home favorite immediately went on the attack with loud applause. Hamilton drove on slightly older medium tyres, while Verstappen got soft tires in the pits. It was somewhat reminiscent of last season's thrilling closing race in Abu Dhabi. George Russell took his Mercedes to second, while Hamilton crashed further on his older tyres. Before the safety car came in, the young Brit also drove for Verstappen, but gave up that position for soft tyres. With that, Hamilton lost the advantage to Verstappen, much to the wrath of the seven-time world champion. Third place went to Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque managed to put pressure on Verstappen with his Ferrari at the start of the race, but at the end he didn't have the pace to fight for the win. Late neutralization prevented him from finishing fourth. With the victory, Verstappen, including the fastest lap point, reaches 310 points. Leclerc and Verstappen's teammate Sergio Pérez follow with 201 points. Pérez finished fifth behind Hamilton, thanks to a time penalty from Carlos Sainz. The next Grand Prix is already in Monza, Italy, this weekend. Dutch GP Result 1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) 2. George Russell (Mercedes) 3. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) 4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) 5.
