BMW engineers are diligently testing the 2024 BMW M5 ahead of its 2023 launch. Its latest prototype gives us a clear idea of what to expect from the first PHEV.
Earlier M5 test cars looked a little rough with the glued-on fenders and headlight and taillight covers. But this prototype looks cleaner. The bow fairings disappeared, revealing slightly flared sheet metal. The new test car also features chrome trim for the M5 quad tailpipes, as well as what appears to be multi-spoke showroom wheels and M rearview mirrors.
The M5 2024's grille images are eye-catching. Earlier prototypes had heavy mesh panels covering the grille buttons, which, like the non-M versions of the upcoming 5 Series, are separated by a large B-pillar. But when that mesh disappeared, the M5 switched from vertical to horizontal grilles, giving the same familiar look and feel found in concept cars like the M3, M4 and M4 CSL and XM.
That's not all the upcoming M5 has in common with the XM. Both cars will use plug-in hybrid engines based on an updated, electrified version of the M5's current 4.4-liter V8, with all-wheel drive. Although last year's XM concept had 750 horsepower. 800 Nm, hotter models to follow.
But information from Autocar in June of this year suggested the M5 would produce around 790 hp. That number seems highly plausible given that the 4.0-liter V8 hybrid powertrain of the latest Mercedes-AMG GT63 E-Performance is rated at 831 hp. and 1400 Nm.
Unfortunately, as BMW has decided not to bring the new M3 Touring to America, there is a worrying possibility that if the M5 wagon does arrive, it will only be in Europe.
